Box Office Projection: Will ‘Karuppu’ Mark Suriya’s Much-Needed Comeback?
Tamil superstar Suriya and Trisha Krishnan’s upcoming film “Karuppu” is shaping up to register the biggest opening of the year in Tamil cinema. The action thriller is projected to open at around ₹18-19 crore net on Thursday, as per the data from RecoBee, a movie analytics platform.
The bumper opening projections for “Karuppu” suggest a much-needed box office comeback for Suriya, who has struggled to achieve major commercial success for the last five years. Despite opening strongly, his last two movies — “Retro” and “Kanguva” crashed at the box office, ending their runs with approx. 60 crore and 70 crore net collections, respectively.

Directed by RJ Balaji and produced by Dream Warrior Pictures, “Karuppu” has generated extraordinary pre-release buzz despite the Tamil Nadu election hogging the limelight during promotions. Advance bookings have also been exceptional, with ticket sales already crossing the ₹5.50 crore mark despite two days remaining until its theatrical release. With the Tamil Nadu government approving special 9 AM shows for the first two days (May 14 & 15), the film will benefit from more shows, giving it a substantial head start at the box office.
However, it's worth noting that a grand opening alone doesn't guarantee success. Suriya’s recent releases serve as cautionary examples — “Retro opened at ₹19.25 cr but dropped to ₹7 cr the next day, while “Kanguva” collected ₹24 crore on day 1 but fell sharply to ₹9.50 crore the following day. Given those trends, it's important for “Karuppu” to not only open strongly but also maintain the momentum through the weekend and into the weekdays. Whether the Suriya-starrer manages a good run or it again turns out to be a one-weekend wonder will largely depend on the film's content and its resonance with audiences.
“Karuppu” hits cinemas this Thursday following multiple production and release delays. The Tamil-Telugu bilingual went on floors in November 2024 and was originally scheduled for release during Diwali 2025. However, the release was postponed due to unfinished post-production and VFX work. Interestingly, the film has already recovered a significant portion of its investment (roughly ₹110 crore) through non-theatrical avenues, thereby reducing its dependence on theatrical performance for financial recovery.
