Box Office: Ayushmann Khurrana’s ‘Pati Patni Aur Woh Do’ Projected to Open Below Kartik Aaryan’s Predecessor Film

Ayushmann Khurrana, Wamiqa Gabbi, Sara Ali Khan and Rakul Preet-starrer romantic comedy “Pati Patni Aur Woh Do” (PPAWD) is set for an average opening at the box office this Friday.

According to the projections by movie analytics platform Recobee, “PPAWD” is expected to open in the range of ₹5-6 crore net, which marks a significantly lower opening than even its predecessor, “Pati Patni Aur Woh”. The 2019 film starring Kartik Aaryan, Ananya Panday and Bhumi Pednekkar had collected ₹9.10 crore net on the first day and went on to earn ₹84.56 crore net in its lifetime, emerging as a major commercial success. Mudassar Aziz has directed both the films.

The trailer and songs of the sequel have received an average-to-positive response from audiences, failing to generate the kind of strong pre-release buzz typically required for a double-digit figure. Trade experts suggest that an ₹8–9 crore opening would have been more favourable for a film of this genre, which is also a sequel to a hit movie and is packed with songs, romance, and comedy — the typical must-have Bollywood movie elements. The lifetime will depend on how audiences receive the content, but as of now, it's looking for a ₹50 crore net finish in cinemas.

In comparison, Ayushmann's last theatrical release, was “Thamma”. His top 5 openings include “Thamma”, “Dream Girl 2” (₹10.69 cr), Bala (₹10.15 cr), “Dream Girl” (₹10.05 cr) and Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan (₹9.55 cr).

However, despite its modest opening, “PPAWD” is expected to dominate the Hindi box office chart in the coming weekend due to limited competition. Another new release, Sanjay Dutt-stareer “Aakhri Sawal” has negligible pre-release buzz and is projected to open below ₹1 crore net on Friday. This would help the Ayushmann Khurrana film to emerge as the primary new contender against holdovers like “Raja Shivaji” and “Bhooth Bangla” which are still performing steadily at the box office.
