‘The Fix’ Director Guy Moshe on Similarities With ‘Dhurandhar’: ‘There is a Lot of Political Intrigue’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Director Guy Moshe has drawn parallels between his film “The Fix” and Aditya Dhar’s “Dhurandhar,” pointing to their shared political intrigue, love story and overall sensibility. In an exclusive conversation with Variety India, Moshe says he could identify similarities between the two films, adding that he was intrigued by the strong response “Dhurandhar” received in India.

He says, “I just love geopolitics. I was able to follow [“Dhurandhar”] a little bit. But I think it’s hard for an average person to know what is going on in Balochistan, Pakistan and India, also with regards to the history. When I say this, I am talking about the international audience. But on the other hand, there are so many sequences that I thought were almost in a similar sensibility [with “The Fix”]. And it was intriguing to me that this film did so well here. It is something not so far out of my own sensibility.”

Moshe adds about the conversation he had with his producers regarding the two films. However, he believes “The Fix” approaches some of these elements through a more American lens. He explains, “My producers have told me that there are certain similarities with “The Fix” and I think there is. Obviously, in a more American sense. There's a lot of political intrigue. It’s the same type of vibe. There's some love story there as well. There’s all these elements in a slightly more detached and less emotional way.”

Speaking of watching Indian films, Guy opens up about being introduced to them through SS Rajamouli’s “R.R.R..” He shares how one of his colleagues and friends told him about “R.R.R.” a couple of years back, which led him to delve more into the Indian film industry. He recalls, “Zach Staenberg, who won the Academy Award for “The Matrix,” is my go-to editor. He was supposed to edit “The Fix” as well, but could not due to certain medical limitations. He called me about this movie called “R.R.R..” Full disclosure: Until that point, I did not have an awareness of what was happening here in the industry and what changed over the years. But he called me up to watch the movie because we love cinema. He tells me, ‘There’s something happening there which I haven’t seen before from a cinematic language perspective.’ He didn’t speak to me about the plot and I didn’t know what the movie was about. I watched it on OTT and could immediately understand what he meant.”

The director was particularly impressed by how the musical sequences were integrated into the narrative. He shares, “There was a certain kind of bold sensibility. I also liked the musical boldness. The musical parts felt organic. With both the films “Dhurandhar” and “RRR,” I thought it’s like Indian cinema getting closer to what Hollywood is doing. And the plots are much more intricate. You need to concentrate and it requires a certain amount of knowledge.”

“The Fix” stars Zachary Levi, Liam Neeson and Elnaaz Norouzi in leading roles. It is an action thriller centred on a group of former CIA operatives who embark on a dangerous covert mission in Tehran, Iran. It was released in India on October 30.
