Sundeep Kishan on His OTT Debut ‘Super Subbu’: “Many People Called It a Risky Move” (EXCLUSIVE)

Sundeep Kishan, who has starred in Tamil and Telugu films, including “Captain Miller,” “Ooru Peru Bhairavakona”  and “Raayan," was appreciated for his understated performance in the Telugu web series “Super Subbu.” He plays a sex education teacher in rural Andhra Pradesh in the show. The actor will next be seen in a trilingual mythological fantasy adventure.

Sundeep Kishan says that despite his flourishing big-screen career, he looked at his OTT debut as a new adventure. He says, “A lot of people have been calling it a risky move, but I have always been someone who's taken the adventurous route. Also, considering this is Netflix’s full-fledged Telugu original series, it is a prestigious opportunity. Also, the way the show is being received is very overwhelming. The whole idea was to be able to make a show based in Andhra Pradesh, which would cross language barriers.”

Asked how closely he relates to the character of Subbu, Sundeep Kishan says he always tries to bring a part of himself into every role. "Subbu is a very endearing, lovable guy, but it was also important to play him as a strong-headed guy, who is stuck in situations, but is capable of handling them.”

Kishan believes OTT offers actors more room to inhabit their characters. He says, “I think it's a whole different way of playing a character, because you get a few extra seconds in every frame, which eventually gives you more time to explore the character and give him space to breathe a little more. In films, particularly the kind of action-adventure films I do that are large scale, you just have to keep it to what that sequence demands. That's the only difference between two mediums. Otherwise, how you approach the story or the character is the same.”

Though people have loved him in “Super Subbu,” Kishan rejects the idea that audiences are moving away from larger-than-life heroes. “The audience will always celebrate larger-than-life heroes, because watching something in a visual narrative that gives you hope or inspiration is the primary ideology of cinema. Hence, I've always chosen to play characters in films like ‘Michael,’ ‘Ooru Peru Bhairavakona’ or ‘Sigma,’ which is Jason Sanjay’s directorial debut. These are all characters that inspire others to face difficult situations in their life. In a way, ‘Super Subbu’ also does that.”
