‘Spider-Noir’ Trailer Review: A Cynical, Jaded, And Brilliant Re-Imagining Of A Marvel Icon

The upcoming Prime Video series "Spider-Noir" is shaping up to be one of the most visually ambitious and tonally distinct superhero projects in years. Fronted by Nicolas Cage in his very first leading television role, the final trailer for the live-action Marvel adaptation promises a stark, cynical, and thrillingly stylized dive into a crime-ridden 1930s New York.

The he series follows Ben Reilly (Cage), a world-weary, down-on-his-luck private investigator struggling to outrun his past. Haunted by a deeply personal tragedy, Reilly is forced to confront his history as the city’s lone, web-slinging vigilante known simply as "The Spider." In a brilliant marketing move, Prime Video released this final look in two distinct formats: an "Authentic Black & White" version that leans heavily into traditional film noir tropes, and a vibrant "True-Hue Full Color" alternative.

Set to the melancholic tones of Amy Winehouse’s "Back to Black," the trailer beautifully balances grim detective fiction with a healthy dose of deadpan humor. This is not your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man; Cage’s Reilly is a hardened, jaded figure who flatly rejects the label of a hero. The footage emphasizes classic noir staples—pouring rain, stark shadows, and mysterious femme fatales while reassuring fans that the series will leave no stone unturned to deliver a blockbuster. The scale looks massive, packed with web-shooting, high-stakes swinging, and explosive action beats.

The trailer also provides a deeper look at the show's supporting cast and a reimagined 1930s rogues' gallery. Lamorne Morris stars as Robbie Robertson, an optimistic freelance journalist trying to pull his cynical friend back into the light. The plot kicks into gear when Cat Hardy enters Reilly's office to report a disappearance, a friend played by Jack Huston, who has terrifyingly transformed into a sand monster.

Huston’s Sandman is just one of several threats plaguing a city on the brink. A mysterious illness is eating citizens alive, and Andrew Lewis Caldwell appears as Megawatt, a shocking villain reminiscent of Electro. Meanwhile, crime bosses Tombstone and Silvermane have effectively seized control of New York. Silvermane is brought to life by the legendary Brendan Gleeson, and the trailer teases an incredible dynamic as Cage's Reilly discovers his powers while clashing with Gleeson’s Irish mob boss. The promise of watching acting titans like Cage and Gleeson square off in a gritty comic-book landscape is arguably the trailer's biggest selling point.

While Reilly insists that being a savior is behind him, the narrative clearly sets up a reluctant, final resurrection of his superhero alter ego. If the final product matches the immense promise, style, and scale of this promotional footage, audiences are in for something truly spectacular.

"Spider-Noir" premieres globally on Prime Video on May 27, 2026.
