“Ramayana," the first instalment of Nitesh Tiwari’s two-part adaptation of the Ramayana, will receive worldwide releases in ScreenX and 4DX during Diwali 2026, Prime Focus Studios announced Wednesday.

The deal with CJ 4DPLEX will see the film play across nearly 1,300 ScreenX and 4DX auditoriums globally. It will also mark the first time an Indian film has been released in ScreenX.

The film stars Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Hanuman and Ravie Dubey as Lakshmana. Namit Malhotra is producing through Prime Focus Studios, in association with DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations. Shridhar Raghavan has adapted the screenplay, while Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman are composing the music.

What is ScreenX?

ScreenX is a premium cinema format that extends selected portions of a film from the main screen onto the walls on either side of the auditorium. The additional imagery creates a 270-degree viewing field, allowing certain sequences to occupy the audience's peripheral vision.

For “Ramayana,” specially formatted sequences will use the side walls during selected action and dramatic moments. It does not mean that the entire film will continuously play across three screens; the expanded presentation is used for specific sequences designed for the format.

The announcement comes after Sony Pictures’ “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” became the highest-grossing ScreenX release in India, according to the companies involved. The film was also the first feature to be filmed specifically for ScreenX.

How 4DX is different

While ScreenX expands the visual frame, 4DX focuses on physical immersion. The format combines motion-enabled seats with environmental effects synchronized to scenes in the film.

Depending on the sequence, 4DX auditoriums can use effects including movement, vibration, wind, water, snow, scents and lighting effects. The format is therefore less about changing the image itself and more about adding physical sensations to the theatrical experience. “Ramayana” will contain sequences specifically formatted for the 4DX presentation.

The film’s wider theatrical plan

“Ramayana" is the first of a planned two-part live-action adaptation based on the Ramayana as attributed to Valmiki. The production is being led by Prime Focus Studios, with DNEG handling production and visual effects work alongside Monster Mind Creations.

The film’s production design is credited to Ravi Bansal and Ramsey Avery, while Terry Notary and Guy Norris are overseeing the action. Part 2 is currently in production and is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release during Diwali 2027.

The ScreenX and 4DX agreement gives “Ramayana” additional premium-format options as it prepares for its global Diwali 2026 theatrical release, with the two formats offering distinctly different ways of presenting the film’s large-scale visual and action sequences.
