The original “Ventilator”, released in 2016, was written and directed by Mapuskar. Set against the backdrop of Ganesh Chaturthi, the Marathi drama follows the Kamerkar family as its members gather at a hospital after their elderly relative, Gajanan, is admitted and placed on a ventilator. What unfolds is an exploration of family relationships, unresolved conflicts and generational differences, with humour woven into a story about mortality and togetherness.
The film featured an ensemble cast led by Ashutosh Gowariker, with Jitendra Joshi, Sulabha Arya, Viju Khote, Satish Alekar and Achyut Potdar, among others. Chopra Jonas also made a special appearance in the film. “Ventilator” went on to win three National Film Awards, including Best Director for Mapuskar, Best Editing and Best Sound Mixing.
The sequel marks a return to one of the projects that helped establish Purple Pebble Pictures as a production banner backing stories across Indian languages. Its filmography includes Marathi titles such as “Paani”, “Firebrand” and “Ventilator”, alongside projects including “The Sky Is Pink” and “The White Tiger”.
For Mapuskar, “Ventilator 2” marks a return to the world of the film that earned him national recognition as a director. With the original story rooted in the dynamics of a family brought together by a medical crisis, the sequel's narrative remains under wraps.
The announcement also comes as Chopra Jonas continues to balance projects in Indian and international entertainment. She is part of S S Rajamouli’s upcoming film “Varanasi”, starring Mahesh Babu and Prithviraj Sukumaran.
