July Box Office Report: ‘The Odyssey,’ ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ ‘Dhamaal 4’ and ‘Jana Nayagan’ Power a Strong Month
The second half of 2026 started on an extraordinary note at the Indian box office with several films hitting the bullseye in July, along with some theatrical disappointments. Hollywood films like “The Odyssey,” “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” and “Evil Dead Burn,” too, boosted business.
Talking about Indian films, “Dhamaal 4,” “Jana Nayagan,” “Lenin,” “Chennai Love Story” and “Gatta Kusthi 2” emerged as success stories. On the other hand, “Alpha,” “Baby Do Die Do,” “I, Nobody” and “Rao Bahadur” failed to draw the audience to theaters.
Hindi Cinema
The Hindi film industry started July on a low note with Alia Bhatt’s “Alpha” (₹58.71 crore) and Huma Qureshi’s “Baby Do Die Do” (₹6.70 crore) underperforming at the box office. However, it saw an upward swing with Ajay Devgn’s “Dhamaal 4,” which collected ₹157.05 crore and is still playing in cinemas. Unfortunately, none of the small films, “Max, Min & Meowzaki,” “Rahun Main Tere Rubaru,” “Dulhaniya Le Aaeegi,” “Uttar Da Puttar,” “The India Story,” “Tera Yaar Hoon Main” and “Bhai Tera Star Hai” managed to impress the audience.

Telugu Cinema
Telugu cinema, known for producing visual spectacles and big-budget films, saw a welcome change as content-driven movies clicked among cinegoers. With Akhil Akkineni’s “Lenin” (₹48.93 crore), Kiran Abbavaram’s “Chennai Love Story” (₹29.33 crore) and Virat Karrna’s “Nagabandham” (₹22.37 crore) becoming box-office hits, the Telugu audiences were showering their love on rooted and relevant stories.
Tamil Cinema
Thalapathy Vijay’s last film “Jana Nayagan” was the biggest highlight of July for Tamil cinema. Despite the online leak, the political actioner saw fans flocking to theaters in huge numbers. It currently stands at a grand total of ₹157.10 crore. Another Tamil film that made money at the ticket windows was Atharvaa’s “Idhayam Murali” (₹21 crore).
Malayalam Cinema
It was a bittersweet month for Malayalam cinema. While Joju George’s “Varavu,” made on a modest budget, raked in ₹10 crore, Prithviraj Sukumaran’s big-budget heist thriller “I, Nobody” emerged as a commercial failure. Other small films, “Pluto” and “Unmadham,” didn’t find an audience at the box office.
Kannada Cinema
Kannada Film Industry had three major releases in July - “Graamaayana,” “Karavali” and “Sarkari Nyaya Bele Angadi.” While “Graamaayana” failed at the box office, “Karavali” turned out to be an average grosser. On the other hand, “Sarkari Nyaya Bele Angadi,” which released this weekend, opened to strong numbers.
Hollywood Films
July turned out to be one of the best months for Hollywood movies, with three movies emerging as money spinners. While “The Odyssey” (₹140.09 crore) and “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” (₹151.04 crore) are dominating the domestic market, “Evil Dead Burn” also managed to earn ₹31.30 crore despite low pre-release buzz.
