Director Raghav Khanna to Helm Documentary on Subhash Ghai’s Cinematic Legacy (EXCLUSIVE)
Director Raghav Khanna is all set to make a feature-length documentary that showcases how Subhash Ghai defined the scale, sound, and style of Hindi cinema in the 80s and 90s. The documentary, a collaboration between Epic Studios and Mukta Arts, will premiere at a prestigious film festival before moving to a global streaming platform.
The documentary explores the changes witnessed in the 1980s and ’90s, viewed through the lens of Ghai’s cinematic milestones. It also explores the industry’s technical evolution and features interviews with cinematographers, composers and editors to reveal how he shaped the scale, technical grammar and ambitions of Indian cinema. By using news archives, behind-the-scenes footage and select recreations, the project revisits an important chapter in the journey of both the filmmaker and the country.

Subhash Ghai, who is considered one of the defining showmen of mainstream Hindi cinema, was known for mounting large-scale entertainers that blended music, drama, and romance. His films also boasted memorable soundtracks. Across the 1980s and ’90s, his films such as include “Kalicharan” (1976), “Vishwanath” (1978), “Karz” (1980), “Krodhi” (1981), “Vidhaata” (1982), “Hero” (1983), “Meri Jung” (1985), “Karma” (1986), “Ram Lakhan” (1989), “Saudagar” (1991), “Khalnayak” (1993), “Pardes” (1997) and “Taal” (1999) proved his might at the box office.
