“Chaar Yaar”, Prime Video’s latest offering, is inspired by its director and co-writer, Vinay Waikul’s personal life. Not the crime drama itself, but the friendships at the heart of it. The series, which arrived on streaming on October 23, 2026, is about four friends in Mumbai who start committing car robberies to better their middle-class lives but gradually get pulled into the larger crime world of dirty cops and local gangsters. Even as the eight-episode series reached a satisfying ending, the finale teased a potential second outing for Jay (Prerak Mehta), Tony (Saqib Ayub), Saahil (Purav Jha) and Sameer (Naman Jain).
In an exclusive chat, Variety India asked Waikul whether the voiceover mentioning the “next story” meant that “Chaar Yaar” Season 2 was imminent.
“We have something in mind. But it is something that I can't tell you yet,” Waikul teases, considering the series has only been out for a few days. But there’s definitely an open ending there that can be explored, especially when one thinks about the nature of crime. Once tempted, it can be difficult to resist its lure. And even after Bhalerao (Sai Tamhankar in a cop’s role) saves their lives and gives them a chance to start with a clean slate, they might slip back into crime.
Waikul echoes the sentiment. “These characters are the way they are, but now they have gone through these experiences. They will evolve in a certain way. But your true character never leaves you. They will be different, but they will be the same as well. Based on that, we will develop something. We have a few ideas. But let's see how things go.”
Waikul began his journey in the OTT space with directing the Nimrat Kaur-led “Test Case” and has gone on to direct series like “Aranyak,” starring Raveena Tandon, and “The Broken News” with Jaideep Ahlawat, Sonali Bendre and Shriya Pilgaonkar. Much has changed for the medium over the years, including “Mirzapur”’s major move from OTT to the big screen with “Mirzapur: The Movie”. When asked if the latter’s success has influenced his ambitions for future projects, Waikul agrees he’d love to make a film.

“What ‘Mirzapur’ did has opened up a lot of avenues for series directors. I definitely want to make a feature film. If possible, a theatrical feature film, because that has been the upbringing that everybody wants to go back to. So I would love to do that. But I want to do it at my own pace and in my own time. There are scripts which I am developing and there is a certain economics to look at as well. But yes, I want to make a feature film. Maybe an OTT film for now and then a theatrical film,” Waikul concludes.
