Writer-Producer Biswapati Sarkar on Why Comedies Are Working in 2026: ‘I Feel There’s a Crime Thriller Fatigue’
Stories that reflect the lives and aspirations of ordinary people have long resonated with Indian audiences. Few writers understand that better than screenwriter and producer Biswapati Sarkar, whose work has struck a chord with viewers over the years. As an actor on “Panchayat,” where he played Prateek, and this time with the Prime Video show “Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya,” where he has joined as a creator alongside Sameer Saxena, the rustic tales of people from humble beginnings form his filmography.
Talking exclusively to Variety India about why he keeps returning to these stories, he says, “I don’t understand anything else. This is the world I come from and know. While I enjoy watching a king in action, killing 10 people, it’s not something that I can write about. That’s not something that comes to me naturally. Our entire writing team likes to talk about ordinary people in extraordinary situations. We write about people around us and that’s what we’re good at.”

Sharing how the storyline process of this creation of his came to be, he adds, “A lot of this comes from my school, from my experiences. We have seen many of these elements while researching. I want these kinds of teachers. Maybe with better infrastructure.”
He attributes the increase in interest in comedy drama in recent years and especially in 2026 to the excessive presence of thrillers in the OTT space. “According to me, there’s a crime thriller fatigue in streaming. Because so many platforms have done it. I think ‘Raakh’ did really well, but before that I don’t really remember which show (got that attention).”

Believing that the viewers are gravitating towards light, uncomplicated entertainment, he shares, “There’s that feeling of wanting to watch something light, something that you can watch while eating lunch or with your family. That’s very rare these days.”
