Art vs. Artist: Fair Compromise or Cop-Out? Feat. BTS and J.K. Rowling

Singers, actors, authors, creators and countless public figures with influence over audiences across ages, nationalities and genders possess a certain soft power. Their words, actions and associations can shape public opinion, influence behavior and spark debate.

But where does one draw the line between an artist and their art? Can audiences continue to appreciate a song, book or film while rejecting the views and actions of the person behind it? Or does separating the two sometimes become a convenient way of avoiding accountability?

BTS And The Backlash Over Associations

RM and j-hope attended Usher’s concert on August 12 as part of his ongoing The R&B Tour at Rogers Stadium in Toronto, Canada. Shortly after, clips of the two dancing to co-headliner Chris Brown surfaced online. The duo also went backstage to meet the artists and expressed their admiration, calling it an “honor.”

The controversy centers largely on Chris Brown’s 2009 domestic violence case involving Rihanna. He later pleaded guilty in a 2023 London nightclub assault case, alongside facing several other allegations of violence. Meanwhile, Usher has also faced criticism over his comments and apparent support for Sean “Diddy” Combs amid the latter’s legal troubles.

When The Creator Becomes Controversial

J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” books and their film adaptations helped launch the careers of stars including Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson. However, her comments about the transgender community have been criticized, leading to the question of whether audiences can separate the fictional universe she created from her views.

Several actors associated with the upcoming HBO adaptation of the books have defended their decision to be part of the series. Their argument, broadly, is that the “Harry Potter” universe is beyond its creator and that working on the franchise does not necessarily amount to an endorsement of Rowling’s views.

Facing Scrutiny

Lizzo has long championed body positivity, but allegations of harassment and a hostile work environment made by former dancers led to a legal dispute. While the singer has denied the allegations, the controversy has continued to shape conversations around her public image and conduct.

Meanwhile, Cardi B has faced scrutiny over past incidents, including a 2022 guilty plea to third-degree assault. She has also faced calls for boycotts and demands for greater accountability over her actions.

Different Artists, Different Responses

BTS has repeatedly demonstrated a willingness to acknowledge criticism and make changes. RM was called out for lyrics perceived as objectifying women in the group’s 2014 track “War of Hormone” as well as for the misogynistic themes in his 2015 solo song “Joke.” He subsequently addressed the criticism, apologized, and had the lyrics reviewed by a women’s studies professor. Cardi B has addressed her past actions, including those from her time in the adult entertainment industry, and has said that some of those choices were driven by survival.

J.K. Rowling continues to stand by her views, maintaining that they are driven by her commitment to women’s rights. Lizzo strongly denied the claims against her.

Art, Accountability And The Audience

Today, fans are not only scrutinizing an artist’s work but also their words, actions, collaborations and public associations.

Separating the art from the artist can allow audiences to engage with a piece of work without necessarily endorsing its creator’s beliefs. But does that separation shield them from accountability? When the words and actions of a celebrity enter the public sphere, scrutiny is an inevitable part of the bargain.
