‘The Sheep Detectives’ Review: Agatha Christie Meets Barnyard Charm

Speaking animals make for a great movie premise. Whether it’s a newborn piglet in “Babe” or a talking rat in “Stuart Little,” nothing entertains more than four-legged creatures with human-like qualities. Directed by Kyle Balda and adapted from Leonie Swann’s 2005 novel “Three Bags Full,” this live-action/CGI mix is a fantastic watch right till the end.

“The Sheep Detectives,” as the title suggests, revolves around a flock of sheep who decide to investigate the murder of their beloved shepherd George Hardy (Hugh Jackman). While as simple as it might sound, the way the sheep go about putting the pieces together is anything but simple. Right from the onset, the film has an instantly likable appeal. We get to meet the flock one sheep at a time. They are all of different sizes and shapes, young and old, each with unique personalities and opinions to share.

The reason you become so invested in these sheep is because of the voices behind them. Hold the mic while I drop the names: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O’Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, Brett Goldstein and Rhys Darby, to name just a few members of the flock. There are several moments that tug at your heartstrings. Most of them come early on and linger till the last frame.

Where the film leaves its strongest impact is in how it takes the story forward without derailing the pace at any point. You can almost sense an Agatha Christie-coded treatment in the way the suspense unfolds. The length of the film also works in its favor. It is tight, brisk and never meanders aimlessly.

“The Sheep Detectives” bleats its way into your heart with its simplistic charm and an enjoyable narrative. It takes you back to days of innocence and reminds you why one goes to the movies in the first place. Take your kids along and, if you don’t have any, go ahead anyway and have a great time at the theaters.
