SS Rajamouli Says ‘Varanasi’ Is Shot Using IMAX-Certified Digital Cameras, Calls It His Most Ambitious Film Yet

SS Rajamouli is currently working on his next movie, Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran starrer “Varanasi.” Sharing details about the magnum opus with Tsounami, Rajamouli revealed that the the movie is shot using IMAX-certified digital cameras, and is filmed for IMAX.

Opening up about the title announcement teaser and why the filmmaker chose to keep most of the movie’s details under the wraps, Rajamouli also said, “I didn't want to reveal too much because it wouldn't do justice to the film. Instead, we made a video showing the kind of experience audiences can expect, without revealing the story.” He also shared that work on the film is being handled at a rapid pace, as “every completed sequence is immediately edited and sent to the visual effects team, allowing different departments to work in parallel and keep the production on schedule.”

In the same interview, the Rajamouli had also added that they have “finished the biggest action scenes. We still have the smaller scenes and everything in between.” “We’ve shot about 80 percent of the film; the other 20 percent is in progress,” he explained.

“Varanasi” is scheduled to release on April 7, 2027. The makers, including the lead actors had previously organised an event in Hyderabad, titled “Globetrotter,” to unveil the movie’s title and Mahesh Babu’s character. Moreover, on Priyanka's 44th birthday on July 18, the makers also dropped her fierce character look as Mandakini for her fans.
