‘The East Palace’ Teaser Review: Nam Joo Hyuk Unleashes Havoc on Sinning Spirits

A palace that you cannot escape. A King who fears for his life. Marred with the unknown possibilities of a haunted royal abode, a ghost-slayer is invited to “The East Palace” to eliminate the obscure presence. The upcoming K-drama, awaited for a long time, places itself amid a wave of horror masterpieces that have hit the screens in recent months, which makes it a deciding addition to the lineup from the Korean space.

Director Choi Jung Gyu has had a successful track record, thanks to projects like “Children of Nobody” and “The Devil Judge,” which have found themselves at the receiving end of defining praise, and now has the chance to further cement his name in the genre.

Invited by the ruler (Cha Seung Woo), Gu Cheon (Nam Joo Hyuk) is introduced as the only one who can save all those who have been sacrificed in the name of a bad omen. He devises a plan to fight against the deeply resentful source called won-gwi (vengeful spirit) and puts himself into the eye of the storm. Possessing the ability to turn into a spirit, he charges ahead with his sword, aiming to slay those hidden inside the Realm of the Gwi.

The spirit-slayer faces a force larger than life and death, and seeks the help of a court lady, Saeng Gang (Roh Yoon Seo), who can communicate with the dead. Together, they punish the sinners and uncover deeply hidden realities of the palace that have caused the indignation. Nam Joo Hyuk appears as the one who tries to get rid of the foreboding existence in the palace. With this project, he has the opportunity to revive his name by creating an underscored character following his return from mandatory conscription.

The ominous nature of the teaser does everything right in presenting itself to a deeply desperate audience of Korean horror fans. “The East Palace” comes at a time when K-dramas are in desperate need of a resurrection, what with the surprising insipid performance these past few months.

Nam Joo Hyuk and Roh Yoon Seo’s acting careers need a strong performance in the show to be brought back to the level of fame they once boasted in the business. The release is placed among multiple anticipated project releases around the world, making it that much more important as well as difficult for it to stand out and demand online discourse.

“The East Palace” premieres with all episodes on July 17 on Netflix.
