‘One Hundred Years Of Solitude’ Season 2 Review: Stunning Visceral Adaptation is A Cinematic Effort on Par With the Best
The series adaptation of “One Hundred Years Of Solitude” [the first season aired in 2024] is daring in endeavor, just going by the sheer scale given to literary great Gabriel García Márquez’s multi-generational novel set in the fictional town of Macondo.
The second season of the period drama starts with the ‘Armistice’ where the Liberal Forces led by Colonel Aureliano Buendía (Claudio Cataño) decide to end the exhausting Civil War, which is fostering a seething resentment in the town of Macondo.
This part of the series focuses on the journeys of the twin brothers, Aureliano and José Arcadio Segundo (Julian Roman) who change the fortunes of Macondo. It also highlights the shift in the Buendía household as Fernanda Del Carpio (Laura Taylor/Carla Baratta) takes over from an aging Úrsula Iguarán (Marleyda Soto).

What strikes you instantly is the richness of every frame. The cinematic retelling does complete justice to Márquez’s imagination in the novel in terms of cinematography, art and production design. Catherine Rodríguez's costumes deserve a special mention matching the milieu’s social construct. It is almost a visceral experience where a viewer can feel the sense of decay, loneliness and grief that defines the devastation of the town as a banana economy.
Performance-wise, Soto leads from the front as the matriarch Úrsula Iguarán. She dominates the screen with ease whether it is her confrontation with son Aureliano or her stoicism in moments of grief. Carla Barrata is excellent as the older version of the hyper-religious Fernanda. The leading man, Claudio Cataño also puts in a nuanced performance, as the colonel whose decision to end the war consumes his heart and soul.
Directors Laura Mora and Carlos Moreno hold your attention with some deftly executed scenes. The duo capture the magic realism of the novel with a lot of skill whether it is shooting at the carnival or the swarm of yellow butterflies sequence. The series does not hesitate from showcasing the moral conflicts of the novel, especially ones around sex, greed and violence. Viewers will see an unconventional Remedios The Beauty (played by actress Daniella Reyes) stark naked on screen and Fernanda’s strict rules on fornication. This lack of subtlety makes it even more authentic to the original work
The finale of “One Hundred Years Of Solitude” Season 2 will be released on August 26. This masterpiece is a must-watch for those who have read the novel. For others, it is a cinematic effort that is right up there with the best in the world of global content.
