‘My Dearest Assassin’ review: A High-Stakes Thriller That Gets Tangled in Its Own Web

Many times, one tends to be mistaken by the logline of a movie or web series and ends up watching the offering only to be left disappointed. ‘Hunted for her rare blood type, a young girl is raised by a family of assassins. When a vengeful enemy returns for her blood, she is determined to fight alongside the one she loves to claim her freedom once and for all.’ This should seem like a pretty intriguing plot for anyone wanting to watch "My Dearest Assassin". You’ve got action and romance, what could possibly go wrong? Well, in this case, there’s a lot that did.

This Netflix film follows Lhan, a young woman whose rare blood type has been on the radar of several bad guys since she was young. After losing her parents, she has been under constant threat and was then taken in by House 89, a secretive family of assassins who vow to protect her at all costs. While growing up there, she forms a bond with Pran, and the two explore their relationship as they fight to stay alive. The film begins as a straightforward revenge thriller, eventually blending with romance and grief as Lhan comes to terms with her life and the trauma she has endured throughout.

What works

That said, not everything is underwhelming. The action sequences are engaging with the choreography done in such a manner that it creates a dark and eerie atmosphere where danger lurks at every turn.

Those who tuned in for the romance will find the track between the lead pair, Lhan and Pran, like a breath of fresh air. When the narrative of the film dips, it’s this track that brings things on track in a world where everyone’s out for blood, and her blood in particular. And a major reason for this is the protagonist, Pimchanok Luevisadpaibul, who delivers a sincere performance. Her arc is no less than an emotional rollercoaster as she moves between fear and staying strong. This is why seeing her transform from someone vulnerable to a lady capable of landing kicks and punches makes for a decent watch.

What doesn’t

The biggest problem with "My Dearest Assassin" is balance, for it tries to cover way too much. Everything going on in Lhan's life feels real (along with thrilling, thanks to the action), but there is so much going on in her life that you really struggle to understand. It feels real, but the word audiences might be looking for is relatable. One might think they’re going to get something that will have them on the edge of their seat, but the longer the film progresses, there's more information overload. With unnecessary subplots that slow down the film, ‘My Dearest Assassin’ feels longer than its runtime of two hours.

In what was supposed to be a story about loss, love, and murder, the movie tries to achieve and cover a lot, but struggles to make a clear landing. By mixing too many flavours, not in the right quantity, here’s a film that leaves no taste.
