From ‘Toy Story’ And ‘Shrek’ To ‘Golmaal’, ‘John Wick’, And ‘Avatar’: The Power Of Five

Let’s be honest: hitting a third movie is an absolute triumph. Making it to a fourth is a rare luxury. But reaching Movie #5? That puts a franchise into an elite circle of pure cinematic endurance. Surviving this long isn't about lazily repeating a winning formula. It’s about completely reinventing it. The best franchises know how to grow up right alongside their audience—welcoming a brand-new generation of moviegoers into the fold while giving loyal, day-one fans a reason to keep buying tickets.

From animated icons to heavy-hitting assassins, cinema has birthed a few legendary giants that mastered the art of the pentalogy, keeping the magic alive all the way to part five.

The journey of the modern five-film franchise is perhaps best exemplified by Pixar’s crown jewel, “Toy Story”, which has officially done the unthinkable by delivering a stellar fifth installment that is out now in theaters. When the original ‘Toy Story’ first burst onto the scene in 1995, it revolutionized animation. Over the next three decades, the franchise pulled off an incredible emotional tightrope walk; ‘Toy Story 2’ (1999) expanded the world, ‘Toy Story 3’ (2010) gave '90s kids the ultimate, tear-jerking farewell to childhood, and ‘Toy Story 4’ (2019) explored existential freedom. Now, ‘Toy Story 5’ (2026) faces the modern era head-on, pitting Woody, Buzz, and the gang against the ultimate playtime threat: kids being entirely obsessed with tablets and phones.

But Pixar isn't the only animation giant returning to its roots to tackle a new generation. DreamWorks has officially broken the internet with the trailer release for ‘Shrek 5’, which is currently in active production for a 2027 release. The green ogre's journey began with the iconic ‘Shrek’ (2001) and the equally beloved ‘Shrek 2’ (2004), both of which became cultural phenomena by upending standard fairy-tale tropes with sharp, edgy satire. While ‘Shrek the Third’ (2007) and ‘Shrek Forever After’ (2010) seemed to close the book on the swamp, the studio is reviving the magic 16 years later. The original heavy-hitters—Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz—are returning to navigate a whole new era of chaos involving Shrek and Fiona's now-teenaged children.

While Hollywood spent the early 2000s perfecting animated satire, Bollywood was busy cooking up its own brand of chaotic, long-running cinema. Just as Shrek was dominating Western screens, director Rohit Shetty and superstar Ajay Devgn built a comedy juggernaut that defined a generation of Indian humor. What started as ‘Golmaal: Fun Unlimited’ in 2006 quickly evolved into a massive, colorful, car-flipping universe with ‘Golmaal Returns’ (2008), ‘Golmaal 3’ (2010), and the horror-comedy blend of ‘Golmaal Again’ (2017). The franchise has survived and thrived by treating its audience like an extended family—perfecting the art of slapstick and meta-humor. Now, ‘Golmaal 5’ (2027) is confirmed and rolling into production, making it the first Bollywood comedy franchise to hit a fifth milestone. The biggest twist this time? Sharman Joshi is officially returning to the franchise nearly 20 years after the original, finally reuniting with the core gang to bring back that classic Laxman energy.

Of course, if we are talking about star-studded Bollywood comedy empires that thrived on absolute madness, one cannot ignore Sajid Nadiadwala's ‘Housefull’ franchise. Trading ‘Golmaal’s’ car stunts for a hilarious web of lies and mistaken identities, this rival comedy giant launched with ‘Housefull’ (2010) and ‘Housefull 2’ (2012). Led by Akshay Kumar and Riteish Deshmukh, the ensemble madness carried through ‘Housefull 3’ (2016) and a time-traveling cursed palace in ‘Housefull 4’ (2019). The franchise recently hit its own pentalogy milestone with ‘Housefull 5’ (2025), which is currently streaming after taking its signature brand of laugh-out-loud escapism and high-seas luxury cruise ship chaos to audiences worldwide.

Stepping away from the world of laughs, the grit of modern action cinema has carved out its own elite five-film mythology. Nobody could have predicted that a modest 2014 neo-noir action film about a man avenging his puppy would evolve into an operatic blockbuster universe, but ‘John Wick’ did exactly that. The franchise completely rewrote the playbook on Hollywood stunt choreography through ‘John Wick: Chapter 2’ (2017) and ‘John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum’ (2019). Keanu Reeves' legendary assassin kept raising the stakes, culminating in the critical masterpiece of ‘Chapter 4’ (2023). While the recent spin-off ‘Ballerina’ expanded the lore, Lionsgate is officially keeping the mainline, gun-fu legacy alive with ‘John Wick: Chapter 5’ currently in early script development.

While John Wick plays out in the gritty shadows of Earth, the ultimate frontier of the five-film commitment belongs to James Cameron, who doesn't just make movies—he builds entire worlds. His sci-fi epic ‘Avatar’ (2009) shattered global box office records with its groundbreaking 3D tech, a feat he repeated over a decade later with the oceanic marvels of ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ (2022). With ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ (2025) fresh in the cultural consciousness and ‘Avatar 4’ (2029) on the horizon, Cameron has famously mapped out the entire multi-film arc of Pandora ahead of time. ‘Avatar 5’ (2031) already has its script locked and pre-production underway, promising a grand culmination to a multi-decade sensory escape.

Whether they make us laugh, cry, or grip the edge of our theater seats, these six sprawling franchises prove that a truly great story never really gets old—it just finds a bigger toy box to play in.
