Fahadh Faasil on his production ‘Bethlehem Kudumba Unit’’s Success: ‘Everything Landed Perfectly!’ (EXCLUSIVE)

It is almost impossible to pin down Fahadh Faasil for an interview. The extremely low-profile, reticent actor and star only addresses the media during the promotions of his films. As a producer, Fahadh has churned out blockbusters like “Premalu,” “Aavesham” and now “Bethlehem Kudumba Unit” — collectively grossing over ₹500 Cr+ worldwide.

Variety India finally caught up with Fafa, as he is affectionately known, when he was in Chennai for the launch of the Tamil version of his mega blockbuster “Bethlehem Kudumba Unit (BKU).”

Congratulations! ‘Bethlehem Kudumba Unit’ has now become the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time.

I’m so happy, as it means a lot to Bhavana Studios, along with my partners Dileesh Pothan and Syam Pushkaran, and, majorly, to director Girish AD, Nivin Pauly, Mamitha Baiju and the entire team of the film. As a producer, I’m glad to see that “BKU” worked big-time with audiences and that it is our biggest hit so far. At Bhavana Studios, we believe in choosing meaningful stories, supporting fresh ideas and giving the product the correct platform.

What would you say made BKU such a mega blockbuster?
I believe good and fresh content will always work. All credit goes to the entire team, especially director Girish AD and Nivin Pauly. What a wonderful, honest script — the age-gap romance, the packaging, the humor… everything landed perfectly. And we got the perfect release date during the Onam holidays.

As a producer, you are spot-on…
(Laughs) I believe that, as a producer, it’s my job to get the right script and marketing. I’m always on the lookout for good stories and fresh talent. In my case, most of the time, it has worked.

As an actor, what next?
My next release as an actor is “Don’t Trouble The Trouble,” a fantasy drama with Baby Sara Palekar, in which I play a magician. It blends director Shashank Yeleti’s distinctive storytelling with fantasy elements. I enjoyed doing this fun film, which is presented by SS Rajamouli sir. It’s releasing on October 2. By year-end, I have an untitled Tamil thriller with director Prem Kumar (“96” and “Meiyazhagan” fame) coming up for release. In Malayalam, my next is “Karate Chandran” for Bhavana Studios, directed by debutant Roy.
