Box Office Weekend Winners: ‘Peddi’ Leads the Charge as ‘Obsession’ Defies Norm and ‘Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai’ Stays Firm
Ram Charan's much-anticipated “Peddi” turned out to be a mammoth box office force this weekend. The Buchi Babu Sana-directed sports action thriller made a sensational debut with ₹100 crore+ worldwide on Thursday (including paid previews) and sustained its extraordinary box-office momentum throughout the weekend.
After opening with an impressive ₹16.53 crore from premiere shows, the film collected a massive ₹43.70 crore net on its full-fledged first day on Thursday. As expected after such a huge opening, the film witnessed a decline on Friday (₹23.17 crore net), but it quickly regained momentum on Saturday and Sunday, accumulating ₹26.22 crore and ₹29.12 crore net, respectively.
“Peddi” has clocked in ₹138.74 crore net over the extended four-day weekend in India, while it has already crossed the Rs 200 crore benchmark worldwide with ₹209.71 crore gross so far. Although the film has been a disappointment in the Hindi belts — it collected only ₹11.75 crore net despite being heavily marketed in Northern India — it has hugely resonated with its core Telugu audiences. Ninety per cent of its total collection (₹124.89 crore) has come from the Telugu-speaking audience alone, underscoring the fact that the film may have underperformed on a pan-India scale, but it is proving to be a massive winner among its core audience base.

“Peddi” needs to collect at least ₹450 crore worldwide to break even. While its sensational opening has provided a strong foundation, the film will need to maintain solid momentum over the next two weeks to emerge as a successful theatrical outcome.
Modest Opening Weekend For 'Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai'
Meanwhile, David Dhawan's swansong “Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai” has collected ₹23.55 crore net over its first weekend. However, it’s better than recent Bollywood releases like “Pati Patni Aur Woh Do” (₹17.10 cr) and “Chand Mera Dil” (₹10.65 cr).
The Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde starrer romantic comedy opened with a decent ₹7.40 crore on Friday (₹7.35 crore). However, the collections didn’t see a spurt and remained steady on Saturday at ₹7.35 crore. Sunday brought only a marginal improvement, with the film collecting ₹8.80 crore, a growth of 20% over Saturday.
“Hai Jawani…” has received a mixed audience reception and its sustainability in theatres is being closely watched. The film's box office fate will largely depend on its weekday hold. At present, the film seems to be wrapping up its lifetime under 50 crore net.
‘Obsession’ Defies Expectations
Hollywood horror “Obsession” recorded a phenomenal staying power at the Indian box office. Defying all expectations, the film has collected ₹17.60 crore net on its second weekend — almost equal to its entire first week collection (₹18.19 crore). That's an unprecedented trend ever seen for a Hollywood title in India.
The film, which had opened to only ₹1.5 crore on its first day, went on to collect ₹3.30 crore on its second Friday. It recorded a staggering Rs 105% growth on Saturday (₹6.70 cr) and another 14% jump on Sunday (₹7.60 crore), its biggest day at the box office. The film's exceptional demand is evident from the fact that its second Sunday collection exceeded the earnings of its entire opening weekend. With ₹35.79 crore net in 10 days, “Obsession” has become the third highest-grossing Hollywood film of this year.
'Bandar' Disappoints Despite Strong Reviews
Anurag Kashyap and Bobby Deol's “Bandar” has turned out to be a disappointment at the box office. The film has managed to collect only ₹2.38 crore net over the weekend. Although the opening was initially impacted by its screen-sharing issues with the national chains, the film failed to show meaningful growth despite its positive reviews. In comparison, Hollywood's “Masters of the Universe” performed significantly better, earning ₹5.10 crore net during its first three days.
Meanwhile, Tamil film “Blast” is having a great theatrical run and recorded a better second weekend at the box office. The Arjun Sarja-starrer martial arts film has collected Rs 9.96 crore net in its second frame, marking a healthy 25% increase over its first three-day weekend (₹7.95 crore). The film has so far collected ₹35.74 crore net, putting it firmly on track to emerge as another commercial success for Tamil cinema after the recent biggie, Suriya's “Karuppu.”
'Deool Band 2’ Continues Its Dream Run
Marathi film “Deool Band 2” continued its dream run at the box office and added another ₹7.15 crore net during its third weekend. The total for this Pravin Tarde-directed devotional drama now stands at ₹59.75 crore net, making it one of the biggest Marathi grossers of all time. The film is expected to comfortably go beyond ₹70 crore net mark by the end of its theatrical run.
Meanwhile, this week's new Marathi release, “Tumbadchi Manjula,” has collected ₹3.25 crore net in the first weekend.
