Box Office Prediction: Seven-Film Clash Dampens Projections for ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga,’ ‘Governor’ and ‘Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata’
It’s been seven weeks since a Hindi film opened to a double-digit figure at the box office, and it looks like the spell will continue this Friday as well. A total of seven new releases four Hindi and three Hollywood movies are hitting Indian theatres this week, all competing for the attention of the audience. In addition, holdovers like “Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai” and “Obsession” will also retain a significant share of screens, resulting in a crowded marketplace and limited screen allocation for the new releases.
Hollywood horror “Obsession” is expected to command a larger pie of screens than the David Dhawan-directed comedy “Hai Jawaani Toh Ishq Hona Hai” this weekend, thanks to its extraordinary box office momentum and sustained public demand. The Curry Barker-directed film has defied all expectations and has turned out to be a major box-office sensation both in India and globally.

Meanwhile, Imtiaz Ali’s “Main Vaapas Aaunga” is heading towards a slow start at the box office and will rely on positive word of mouth to gain momentum. As per the analytical movie platform RecoBee, the Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Vedang Raina and Sharvari starrer partition-era love story is projected to open in the range of ₹3-₹3.5 crore net on its first day.
Despite the well-received trailer and soulful A. R. Rahman songs, “Main Vaapas Aaunga” is yet to generate pre-release buzz due to multiple releases. The makers remain optimistic that a favorable audience reception will help the film sustain itself over the weekend and expand its reach at the box office.
Kangana Ranaut’s “Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata” and Manoj Bajpayee’s “Governor” are also releasing this Friday, but they have generated minimal awareness among audiences, with the latter even likely to open below the ₹1 crore mark. Kangana, who has long been attempting to make a commercial comeback, will likely have to wait until “Queen 2” to revive her box office fortune. Vikram Bhatt’s horror film, “Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past,” will also release amid negligible pre-release buzz.
From Hollywood, two horror-centric films “Backrooms” and “Scary Movie” are set to hit theatres, with both hoping to replicate the surprise success of “Obsession.” However, it’s Steven Spielberg’s much-awaited “Disclosure Day” that is expected to emerge as the new Hollywood winner, with several trade experts predicting that it could even outperform Imtiaz Ali’s film. The mystery-driven sci-fi epic starring Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson and Colman Domingo is carrying significant buzz across India’s metro cities, largely driven by Steven Spielberg’s enduring popularity among cinephiles.
