In pop culture, the name “Baba Yaga” has long been associated with Keanu Reeves’s John Wick films, where his slick assassin is a boogeyman who desires a peaceful life but comes for vengeance when you provoke him. Canadian playwright and theater director Kat Sandler takes this idea for an interesting spin for the stage, wondering what if the Slavic legend of Baba Yaga was about feminist rage? What’s more, her play has been adapted into a bolder, sexier eight-episode limited thriller series by Crave Canada, the home of “Heated Rivalry,” and features Hudson Williams in a double role alongside some beloved Canadian actors.
Here’s everything you need to know about “Yaga,” a supernatural erotic thriller series currently reigning across pop culture conversations.
What is ‘Yaga’ about?
In a sleepy coastal town in Canada, a young fisheries scion named Henry Park goes missing. His rich, not-in-town parents bring in some external help to supplement the local police department’s efforts to find their son — private investigator Charlie Rapp, who seems to have some history with Henry already. Alongside Sergeant Carson, the local detective on the case, Rapp begins his investigation into Henry’s disappearance, starting with his roommate, Logan Casey, who shockingly is a dead ringer for Henry. The clues lead them to a university professor, Dr. Katherine Hargrove, who has a penchant for bones and younger men.
The series has premiered to most positive reviews, with critics and audiences praising it for its visuals and score that help set the tone for the atmospheric horror, the bold scenes and steamy chemistry that is woven into the larger commentary of the series, as well as the performances by Reid, Moss and Williams.
