‘Ramayana’: Ranbir Kapoor Says Use of AI Can Help Improve Filmmaking Techniques and Save Time, But Cannot Replace Hard Work
Ranbir Kapoor has weighed in on the growing use of artificial intelligence in filmmaking, acknowledging the stigma attached to the technology, particularly when it comes to its impact on creative processes. The actor believes AI should be viewed as a tool to improve techniques and save time rather than an easy way out of the hard work involved in making a film.
Speaking about the subject, Ranbir pointed out that the visual effects work on “Ramayana” has involved countless hours of effort from the artistes working on the film. “AI has a little bit of stigma attached to it. Especially in the art form that it's an easy fix. But we were talking earlier, all the VFX artistes have worked countless hours to bring this alive. So I think in the art form AI is a tool where you can better your technique. You can save time."

The actor further clarified that he does not believe AI should replace the effort and creative contribution of artists. Speaking specifically about "Ramayana," he said, “But I don't think people in the industry… Or, I can speak for “Ramayana,” have used AI as an option that saves them from hard work. There's a lot of hard work and a lot of sincerity and passion that's going behind the making of this film.”
Opening up about the usage of Brahma AI in “Ramayana,” producer Namit Malhotra had told ET Now, “The vivid example of that is what we created in our English trailer. We've got tremendous praise, but we've actually brought in human actors, voice actors who came in and performed the voice performances. Some of them actually (the dubbing) are done by the actors themselves who have a good command over the language and are able to emote appropriately in a different language. So we've done that as a first step to make sure that the rendering of that expression and emotion is authentic and led by humans. There is no AI whatsoever."

He further added, “We are making sure that you've got the voice actors. We’ve got people whose faces and lips match the look of the actors. And then we're using a bespoke technology tool that we've created, leveraging AI to stitch that into the face of the actor. So it feels absolutely seamless.”
