Kunal Kemmu on the Viral Pooja Bhatt Meme Linking Him to Alia Bhatt and Kareena Kapoor Khan: ‘I Laugh Out Loud’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Kunal Kemmu is no stranger to the internet’s sense of humor. But even he can’t escape the increasingly elaborate family-tree memes that connect him to Pooja Bhatt, Alia Bhatt and Kareena Kapoor Khan. The viral joke traces his relationship through a chain of marriages, making him the Bhatt family’s “sister’s husband’s sister’s husband’s sister’s husband.”

Speaking exclusively to Variety India, Kemmu says memes aren't exactly a topic of conversation at home, but it has given the family a reason to laugh. More than anything, he sees the attention as a sign that people are still interested in them and finds the creativity behind such memes genuinely entertaining.

Sharing his thoughts on the meme, which takes a scene from his 1998 film “Zakhm,” and the love that his family receives from fans and well-wishers, Kemmu notes, “I find the sense of humor that exists out there amazing. I laugh out loud with the memes and content. It’s so brilliant. Everything is open to everyone. Even the audience has an audience. People have their phones and can put content out there. There is genuine talent as well. People are putting out humor, dancing and more. Unfortunately, sometimes people put out hate as well.”

When asked if the Pataudi-Kemmu family ponders over the social media attention at the dinner table, he reveals, “Honestly, it’s not a topic of discussion. But we do laugh at memes if someone brings it up. We are also thankful and grateful that we are relevant and people are interested in talking about us. It would be really dangerous when nobody is talking about you or interested in you. It’d be like, ‘Do I even exist?’"

Kemmu wrote and directed the recently released “VIBE,” which also stars Preity Zinta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Vanshika Dhir alongside him.
