Box Office: ‘Karuppu’ Becomes First Tamil Film In Nine Months to cross ₹100 Crore, Marks Suriya’s Roaring Comeback
Tamil film “Karuppu” has not only restored Suriya's standing among top leading stars but has also brought cheers to the whole Tamil film industry. The action entertainer has collected ₹100.14 crore net in India in the first week, emerging as the first Tamil film in nine months to cross the ₹100 crore mark at the domestic box office.
Despite delivering several hits at the box office, Tamil cinema has been struggling to produce mega blockbusters on the scale consistently achieved by the Telugu and Hindi film industries. “Karuppu” has become the first ₹100 crore grosser of the year, and the first since Rajinikanth's “Coolie,” which released during the Independence Day weekend last year, and went on to collect ₹285 crore net in India and ₹518 crore worldwide. Ajith Kumar's “Good Bad Ugly” (₹153.77 cr) and Pradeep Ranganathan's “Dragon” (₹102.55 cr) also passed the ₹100-crore mark last year.

With ₹85.14 crore net in Tamil and ₹15 crore net in Telugu, “Karuppu” has become the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2026. The film continues what's shaping up to be a promising year for the industry with small-budget films like “Thaai Kizhavi” (₹62.62 cr), “Youth” (₹52.62 cr), “With Love” (₹30.72 cr) and “Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyii” (₹30.15 cr) successfully minting money at the box office. “LIK: Love Insurance Kompany” (₹43.07 cr) and Dhanush's “Kara” (₹37.48 cr) have also performed well, but cannot be called hits due to their high production cost. A similar fate befell Sivakarthikeyan’s “Parasakthi”, which, despite earning ₹52.50 crore, was ultimately labeled a flop due to its budget and underwhelming recovery.
“Karuppu” is performing exceptionally well overseas as well and has already emerged as the biggest international Tamil grosser of 2026 . The film has collected a massive ₹57 crore gross overseas in the first week, taking its worldwide total to ₹175.17 crore gross. The Middle-East is the strongest contributor ($1.10 million), with the collection in North America, the UK, Australia and New Zealand also remaining encouraging.
Suriya has made a remarkable comeback with “Karuppu”, reaffirming his position as one of the most bankable stars at the Tamil box office. His previous films, like “Retro” (₹60.58 cr) and “Kanguva” (₹70.37 cr) were termed as weekend wonders, failing miserably after a strong opening due to poor content. In contrast, “Karuppu” has received a positive response from all across and is holding in theatres even on weekdays, indicating its wide acceptance among audiences.
Trade experts are expecting the film to see substantial growth over the second weekend, possibly leading to a record-breaking lifetime run at the box office.
