Abhishek Chaubey Teams up with Excel Entertainment For Prime Video Thriller Series (EXCLUSIVE)

After Manoj Bajpayee and Konkona Sen Sharma-starrer “Killer Soup,” Abhishek Chaubey is set to direct another web series. Variety India has exclusively learned that the filmmaker is next helming a thriller drama series for Prime Video.

Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani's Excel Entertainment will produce the yet-untitled show. Plot and other details are currently under wraps, but it's believed to be a thriller set in Bihar, blending crime, social commentary and Chaubey's signature raw storytelling style. The project is currently in pre-production and will go on floors in the second half of this year. Casting is not locked yet, but sources indicate that Siddhant Chaturvedi is discussing a potential collaboration with Chaubey, and it's possible that the talks might be for this project.

According to sources, Chaubey has been developing this series for over two years, and it was recently fast-tracked following the approval from Prime Video. In addition to this, the filmmaker is also developing various projects under his production banner, MacGuffin Pictures. Industry insiders reveal that the projects in the works there include an ensemble-cast theatrical film and a mystery thriller for a streaming platform.

Abhishek Chaubey is known for his gritty storytelling, dark humor, and nuanced exploration of hyper-local, rural and socially relevant themes. His acclaimed films include “Ishqiya”, “Dedh Ishqiya,” “Udta Punjab” and “Sonchiriya”. Chaubey's latest series will mark his second collaboration with Excel Entertainment following “Sharmaji Namkeen,” the final film of the late Rishi Kapoor, which Chaubey co-produced in association with the banner.

The upcoming series also further strengthens the long-standing collaboration between Excel Entertainment and Prime Video. The two companies have previously delivered successful shows such as “Mirzapur,” “Dahaad” and “Made In Heaven.” Their upcoming slate includes the second season of “Dahaad” starring Sonakshi Sinha and directed by Reema Kagti.
