Zee Entertainment Expands Sports Footprint With New ‘Unite8 Sports’ Channels
Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. (ZEEL) is making a aggressive push into the sports broadcasting market with the launch of a new dedicated four-channel network branded as Unite8 Sports.
The move signals a major strategic shift for the media powerhouse, transitioning from broadcasting isolated sporting events on its general entertainment channels to establishing a permanent, dedicated linear sports footprint.

The broadcaster has submitted applications for four new channels divided by language and definition:
Hindi: Unite8 Sports 1 and Unite8 Sports 1 HD
English: Unite8 Sports 2 and Unite8 Sports 2 HD
The network's programming will span a diverse portfolio of sports, targeting both global and domestic audiences with coverage of cricket, football, kabaddi, badminton, wrestling, boxing, and combat sports.
To lead the expansion, Bavesh Janavlekar will take on the additional role of Chief Business Officer for Unite8 Sports, adding to his current responsibilities managing the company’s Marathi movies cluster. "Sports consumption across the country is accelerating rapidly, driven by an increasing demand for live, appointment-based content," said Janavlekar. "Building a robust presence in the linear ecosystem with four channels aligns with our broader strategy of diversifying the content portfolio and building scalable, value-accretive businesses."
The FIFA Ambition
The crown jewel of Zee’s entry strategy relies heavily on football. The company has confirmed it is currently in negotiations with FIFA to secure both the linear television broadcasting and digital streaming rights for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 in India. Securing a marquee property of this scale would instantly position the Unite8 Sports as a major competitor against established dominant players in the Indian sports broadcasting landscape.
