Rajinikanth Reveals Why He Rejected ‘Baashha 2’ and ‘Petta 2’ Before Saying Yes to ‘Jailer 2’

Rajinikanth has revealed why he turned down sequel proposals for two of his popular films, “Baashha” and “Petta”, before agreeing to return as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian in “Jailer 2”. Speaking at the film’s pre release event, the actor explained that he is generally sceptical of sequels unless the original film leaves behind a compelling story to continue.

“I’m generally not keen on sequels because I feel they take the first part, add a little extra flavour, and turn it into another film,” Rajinikanth said.

The actor recalled that Sathya Movies had approached him multiple times with a proposal for “Baashha 2”. The original film, directed by Suresh Krissna, featured Rajinikanth as Manickam, an auto driver with a concealed past as a powerful gangster. Despite the film’s enduring popularity, Rajinikanth was not convinced that the story needed another instalment.

He was similarly unconvinced by an idea for “Petta 2” brought to him by director Karthik Subbaraj. The proposed sequel would have continued the story around Vijay Sethupathi’s character, but the idea did not persuade Rajinikanth to return to that world.

“Jailer”, however, presented a different case. After the film arrived on streaming, Rajinikanth watched it again and began thinking about the possibilities suggested by its ending. In the scene that caught his attention, Varma warns Tiger Muthuvel Pandian that a larger network stands behind him and that the jailer will not be left alone. The film’s reference to three containers carrying goods worth ₹1,000 crore also pointed towards a conflict that extended beyond the events of the first film.

For Rajinikanth, these details offered a foundation for a continuation rather than a reason to simply repeat the original’s formula. He approached director Nelson Dilipkumar with the idea, although Nelson initially felt that they had already extracted as much as possible from the first film. The director reconsidered the proposal after spending about a month thinking it through, eventually developing it into a fuller story.

The sequel reunites Rajinikanth with Nelson and composer Anirudh Ravichander. It also brings in new cast members, including SJ Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan and Suraj Venjaramoodu, alongside returning actors such as Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu and Mirnaa.

“Jailer 2” is scheduled to release in theatres on October 15, 2026. Rajinikanth’s explanation offers a glimpse into his approach to sequels: a successful film may leave audiences wanting more, but that alone is not enough to bring him back. The continuation, in his view, needs to emerge from the story itself.
