‘Obsession’ Continues Box Office Rampage in India, Nearing ₹100 Crore Box Office Performance

“Obsession” started as an indie release from a YouTuber-cum-filmmaker but has managed to surprise audiences and critics alike. Following its US release on May 15 and Indian drop on May 29, the film has become the newest cinema favorite. As of its fifth week, the numbers have raked in close to ₹100 crore gross in India, according to Sacnilk.

The Curry Barker directorial has reached approximately ₹97.50 crore gross in India and is right on track to cross the coveted 100 crore mark in the coming days. More than any viral marketing campaign, the film has invited interest from domestic and international audiences owing to its online presence. Even in its fifth weekend, the show is said to have brought in viewers from Tier I and Tier II cities.

Even as local releases like “Welcome to the Jungle” and big international names like “Supergirl” make their way into the theaters, “Obsession” managed to bring in ₹2.50 crore in its fifth week run, standing the same amount away from reaching the big 100. Moreover, it is inching closer to the record currently being held by “The Conjuring: Last Rites” (₹101.65 crore) as the biggest Hollywood horror in India. Global numbers for the film have crossed $370 million.

“Obsession” OTT release

As many fans await a digital release, there are whispers of a month-end or a July global push for the horror film on OTT platforms. Previously, it was supposed to hit the smaller screens on June 2, but has since been postponed to a later date. While being made with under a $1 million budget, the project has managed to earn multi-fold and is expected to be sold for a hefty amount to likely the biggest bidder. Among the many reports, a June 30 Apple TV release is being spoken about the most, followed by Prime Video rumors. A same-day India drop is unlikely, but fans remain hopeful.
