Met Gala 2027 Theme Revealed: Costume Institute to Honour John Galliano With ‘Horizons’ Exhibition

The 2027 Met Gala theme has been revealed by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The exhibition will be titled “John Galliano: Horizons,” which will aim at recognising the work of designer John Galliano. The exhibition marks just the third occasion that a living designer has been honoured with a solo showcase, following Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons in 2017.

For those unaware, Galliano began his career in 1995 with the famous fashion label Givenchy. From 1997 to 2011, he was appointed as the Creative Director at Dior. He took over as the Creative Director of Maison Margiela from 2014 to 2024. While his career is full of achievements, Galliano has been reprimanded by the public for his multiple antisemitic and racist outbursts. A video of him professing his love for Hitler at a Parisian restaurant had also received reactions on social media. He was also convicted of committing two hate crimes in Paris, following which he faced a fine of approximately $8,500.

One of the incidents involved him insulting a 40-year-old woman in October 2010. In another incident, which led to his arrest in February 2011, Galliano was accused of verbally abusing two people.

According to Vogue, the Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute Andrew Bolton said in a release, “Every Galliano collection begins as a journey among things separated by time, place, or medium: portrait and posture, silhouette and story, memory and material. ‘Horizons’ approaches fashion as a form of cartography, mapping not territories but affinities, tensions, and transformations. It traces how images become ideas, ideas become material, and material becomes emotion.” He added, “Yet a horizon reveals not only what lies before us but also where we stand. The exhibition therefore considers both how Galliano has remapped the world through fashion and how his conduct, its consequences, and changing cultural values have reshaped our understanding of his work."
