‘Kattalan’ Expands the ‘Marco’ Universe With a Key Storyline Ahead of ‘Marco 2’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Malayalam action thriller “Kattalan” is set to play a larger role within the expanding “Marco” universe, with the film directly connecting to an unresolved narrative thread from “Marco.” It potentially sets up future developments for the franchise, Variety India has learned exclusively.

Director Paul George’s feature debut, “Kattalan,” is being positioned not as a standalone story but as a film that broadens the world established in “Marco.” While the earlier film introduced several story elements that remained open-ended, “Kattalan” is expected to revisit one of those key threads and provide additional context within the larger narrative.

The connection traces back to the final moments of “Marco.” Audiences who followed the film closely were introduced to a child during the climax, later revealed to be Marco’s nephew. The child was kidnapped, but the reason behind it was intentionally left unexplained.

According to the makers, “Kattalan” builds on that unresolved mystery and incorporates it into its own story structure, creating a narrative bridge between the two films.

The film also reportedly concludes with a tease designed to push the larger storyline forward, suggesting that “Kattalan” could become an important link in the progression toward “Marco 2” and future installments within the universe.

The increasing use of interconnected storytelling has become a trend across Indian cinema, with franchises extending beyond direct sequels into larger narrative worlds. With “Kattalan,” the approach appears to move toward expanding the mythology and character relationships already introduced in “Marco.”

Set against the backdrop of ivory smuggling, “Kattalan” stars Antony Varghese Pepe in the lead role alongside Dushara Vijayan, who makes her Malayalam debut with the project.

The supporting cast includes Sunil, Kabir Duhan Singh, Jagadish, Siddique, Anson Paul, Raj Tirandasu, Baby Jean, Hipster, Hanan Shaah and Parth Tiwari.

The film is co-written by Paul George, Joby Varghese and Jero Jacob, with dialogues by Unni R. Music is by B Ajaneesh Loknath and Ravi Basrur, cinematography by Renadive, editing by Shameer Muhammed and action choreography by Kecha Khamphakdee. “Kattalan” is produced by Shareef Muhammed under Cubes Entertainments.
