Kamal Haasan Appeals for Industry-Wide Cost Corrections Amid West Asia Crisis

Veteran actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan has issued a strong appeal to the Indian film industry, urging producers, actors and technicians to adopt more sustainable filmmaking practices as global economic uncertainty begins affecting cinema economics.

In a detailed note shared on Instagram and X on Thursday evening, Haasan warned that rising fuel, logistics and production costs could soon reshape the entertainment business in India.

“The continuing crisis in West Asia is deepening,” Haasan wrote, adding that India was already beginning to feel the impact through inflationary pressures and rising operational expenses. He pointed out that the Indian film industry is confronting these challenges at a time when budgets are already ballooning and post-pandemic recovery remains uneven.

“The burden will inevitably fall on producers, workers, theaters, distributors, financiers and the entire ecosystem. If cinema must continue to grow, we must ensure every rupee spent serves the film and not merely the appearance of scale,” he wrote.

He added, “Let me be clear. Any correction in cinema economics must never come at the cost of workers’ wages, safety, dignity, food, transport, accommodation or humane working conditions. The burden cannot fall on those who labor the hardest.”

“The correction we need is elsewhere: in avoidable waste, poor planning, inflated entourage culture, unnecessary foreign travel, production delays and the growing disconnect between spending and purpose. Why must every love story bloom only in Paris, and every honeymoon in Switzerland? Romance, fortunately, does not require exchange rates. Indian cinema deserves a little more confidence in itself and in our beautiful country.”

Calling for urgent dialogue, Haasan proposed an industry-wide meeting. “I urge an industry-wide conversation between producers, actors, directors, unions, studios, exhibitors, distributors, OTT platforms and guilds on how we collectively navigate the economic challenges ahead,” he stated.

Emphasizing the importance of practical and sustainable operating practices, he added, “Extravagance is often mistaken for scale. But some of our greatest films were not made with excess, but with clarity, discipline and conviction. The national call for responsible consumption and collective discipline is a timely reminder that every sector must act with foresight and restraint during periods of global uncertainty. The Indian film industry too must rise to the occasion.”

Speaking about the influence and responsibility of the medium, he noted, “Cinema carries responsibility beyond entertainment alone.”

Concluding his note, he wrote, “Those of us who have received the most from this industry must lead by example first. If we protect the economics of cinema today, we protect the future of cinema tomorrow.”
