While the trend of re-releases of cult classics and blockbusters is huge in the West, it has grown strongly in the Indian market only in recent years. However, this experimental strategy has delivered a combination of shocks and surprises at the box office. While some originally flopped small movies found a second life, a few blockbusters starring A-listers failed to make an impact in their re-runs.

As the re-release of the MCU film, “Avengers Endgame: Encore,” has performed well, here’s a look at the Indian films that clicked and failed in their second phase of theatrical runs.

THE HITS

Baahubali: The Epic

SS Rajamouli clubbed “Baahubali: The Beginning” and “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion”  and re-released them as “Baahubali: The Epic” with sharp editing. The re-run opened to good numbers and earned ₹33.87 crore at the box office.

Sanam Teri Kasam

The Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane-led romantic drama had collected ₹9.10 crore during its original theatrical run in 2016 and turned out to be an underperformer. However, with a cult-classic following on TV and later on OTT, it re-released in 2025 and raked in ₹33.18 crore, domestically.

Tumbbad

The folk horror, which earned ₹12.44 crore during its original theatrical run at the box office in 2018, received a great response in its 2024 re-release and collected ₹30.50 crore.

Ghilli

The 2004 blockbuster featuring Thalapathy Vijay and Trisha Krishnan was re-released in 2024 as a 20-year celebration and collected ₹24 crore at the ticket windows, due to its nostalgic factor, the humongous stardom of Vijay and his onscreen chemistry with Krishnan.

Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani

The 2013 romantic musical blockbuster headlined by Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone re-released in 2025, attracting tremendous footfalls in the domestic market. The film raked in ₹17.69 crore during its re-runs, thus taking its total theatrical collection over ₹200 crore.

Apart from the above-mentioned films, “Padayappa,” “Mankatha,” “Sachein,” “Rockstar,” “Khaleja,” “Laila Majnu,” “Murari” and “Kushi” have garnered strong numbers during their re-releases.

THE MISSES

Karan Arjun

The expectations for the re-release of the Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan-starrer were high in the industry in 2024. However, the film failed to get audiences to cinema halls despite having a wide re-release across over 2,000 daily shows. It raked in approximately ₹1 crore in its opening weekend at the box office.

Padmaavat

The makers of “Padmaavat” re-released their blockbuster seven years after the original release date. However, due to a lack of promotions and competition from fresh releases, it failed to garner a response from cinegoers, thus earning merely ₹10 lakh on its first day.

Anwar

The 2010 Malayalam action-thriller “Anwar” starring Prithviraj Sukumaran was re-released in October 2024 in 4K-remastered and Dolby Atmos format. While it was surrounded by buzz during the re-run, it ultimately turned out to be a losing affair, as it grossed approximately ₹5.4 lakh over its initial four days.

Veer-Zaara

Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Rani Mukerji’s romantic drama, considered one of the most loved Hindi movies, didn’t perform as per expectations in its 2024 re-release and did business of ₹2.6 crore in the domestic market.

Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai

Hrithik Roshan’s debut film, which made him an overnight sensation, was re-released on the actor’s 51st birthday and the film’s 25th anniversary. Despite a decent start, it managed to collect an estimated ₹2.63 crore in its first week at the box office.

Andaz Apna Apna

Just like “Karan Arjun,” Aamir Khan and Salman Khan’s “Andaz Apna Apna” was highly promoted during its theatrical re-release in April 2025. However, it faced a disappointing fate at the box office, raking in merely ₹1.36 crore.
