"Doraemon: Castle Of The Undersea Devil" has emerged as a surprise success story at the Indian box office. Released on October 2, the anime film opened amid relatively low expectations but has picked up strongly over its first three days, with audiences, particularly kids and families, showing a clear interest in the latest Doraemon adventure.

The film has collected ₹7.1 crore net in India in its opening weekend, with its collections standing at ₹1.95 crore on Friday, ₹2.15 crore on Saturday and ₹3 crore on Sunday. The film also recorded an impressive 3,63,636 footfalls across the first three days, indicating that the strong numbers are being driven by actual audience turnout.

‘Doraemon: Castle Of The Undersea Devil’ enters top five

The film's strong weekend has now pushed it into the top five highest-grossing anime films in India. According to Sacnilk, "Doraemon: Castle Of The Undersea Devil" has surpassed "Jujutsu Kaisen 0", which finished its India run at ₹4.85 crore net, to become the fourth highest-grossing anime film in the country.

The film currently trails "Suzume", which has collected an estimated ₹8.45 crore, and "Shinchan: Our Dinosaur Diary", which stands at ₹8.83 crore. With ₹7.1 crore already in the bag after just three days, "Doraemon: Castle Of The Undersea Devil" is expected to overtake both films soon and move into second place on the list.

The current top five anime grossers in India are:

1. "Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle" – ₹74.71 crore
2. "Shinchan: Our Dinosaur Diary" – ₹8.83 crore
3. "Suzume" – ₹8.45 crore (estimated)
4. "Doraemon: Castle Of The Undersea Devil" – ₹7.1 crore
5. "Jujutsu Kaisen 0" – ₹4.85 crore

The performance is particularly notable given the modest expectations surrounding the release. The film's reception among children appears to have played a key role in its strong opening weekend, with the familiar Doraemon character and family-friendly adventure helping it connect with its core audience.

A new chapter for Doraemon in India

Directed by Tetsuo Yajima, "Doraemon: Castle Of The Undersea Devil" is a remake of the 1983 film "Doraemon: Nobita And The Castle Of The Undersea Devil". The latest version brings Nobita, Doraemon and their friends back for another underwater adventure.

For the Indian market, the film's opening suggests that there is a sizeable audience for anime beyond the biggest theatrical franchises. With the right marketing and promotion, films aimed at children and families can also make a significant impact at the box office.

With ₹7.1 crore already earned in three days, "Doraemon: Castle Of The Undersea Devil" now has a strong chance of climbing further up the anime box-office rankings in the days ahead.
