Theatrical Releases This Week: From ‘Other Mommy’ To ‘The Social Reckoning’

The October 9 theatrical slate is a multilingual mix, with Hollywood bringing political drama, horror and creature-feature fare, while regional cinema spans family entertainers, crime thrillers, comedies, romances and socially rooted dramas. Among the week’s releases are Aaron Sorkin’s "The Social Reckoning," Rob Savage’s "Other Mommy," Telugu titles including "Comrade Kalyan" and "Mayookha," and a strong Marathi lineup featuring "Paach Futaacha Bachchan," "Dhappa," "Sahal" and "Afratafri." 

ENGLISH

Other Mommy

Release date: October 9, 2026

Jessica Chastain plays both Bela’s mother and the sinister entity that begins appearing to the eight-year-old in Rob Savage’s "Other Mommy." Based on Josh Malerman’s "Incidents Around the House," the horror film also stars Jay Duplass, Dichen Lachman and Karen Allen. The unsettling mother-child dynamic gives this one a particularly creepy hook.

The Social Reckoning

Release date: October 9, 2026

Aaron Sorkin returns to the world of Facebook with "The Social Reckoning," this time examining the fallout from the company’s role in amplifying extremism. Jeremy Strong plays Mark Zuckerberg, with Jeremy Allen White, Mikey Madison and Betty Gilpin also starring. Based on "The Facebook Files," it brings Silicon Valley, whistleblowing and corporate accountability into one combustible drama.

Beware Boiuna

Release date: October 9, 2026

An Amazon medical mission becomes a fight for survival when the team attracts the attention of Boiúna, a colossal ancient predator. Mike P. Nelson directs Logan Marshall-Green, Jessica Rothe and Kiana Madeira in this creature feature, which trades urban horror for the claustrophobia of the rainforest. If giant-monster cinema is your thing, the setting alone makes it worth a look.

MARATHI

Paach Futaacha Bachchan

Release date: October 9, 2026

Kaustubh Ramesh Deshpande brings the world of kirtan to the big screen with "Paach Futaacha Bachchan," starring Shruti Madhudeep, Gauri Nalawade, Shashank Shende, Chinmayee Sumeet, Kishor Kadam and Kshitish Date. The film promises a rough-edged story rooted in Maharashtra’s kirtan culture, with an ensemble cast and a theatrical sensibility setting it apart from the week’s other Marathi releases.

Dhappa

Release date: October 9, 2026

Shambhu’s world changes when he falls for Nia, a mute girl who arrives in his village during Diwali, only for her sudden disappearance to send him looking for answers. Raviraj Limbadas Wavhole directs Sagar Bhandare, Pratiksha Atram and Rushikesh Kalaskar. The mix of romance, mystery and rural drama gives "Dhappa" its hook.

Sahal

Release date: October 9, 2026

School friendships, class differences and adolescent rivalries form the backbone of Mukund Vasant Khuperkar’s "Sahal." Devika Daftardar, Kalyani Adsul, Siddhesh Khuperkar, Pauravi Pendharkar and Tara Daake lead the cast, while the story follows a group of students as a school trip sparks conflicts beyond the classroom. Its youthful perspective makes it an interesting Marathi coming-of-age drama.

Afratafri

Release date: October 9, 2026

Three brothers, one crore-rupee insurance policy and absolutely no shortage of greed. Milind Zumber Kavde’s "Afratafri" turns a family’s desperation for money into a comic free-for-all, with Sanjay Narvekar, Mohan Agashe, Asawari Joshi, Onkar Bhojane, Shashank Shende and Neha Khan in the ensemble. The promise here is uncomplicated: money, madness and family relationships colliding at full speed.

TAMIL

Thaainilam

Release date: October 9, 2026

Amar Ramachandran and Neha Amar headline "Thaainilam," Abhilash G. Devan’s drama set against the aftermath of the Sri Lankan civil war. Bala Singh, Nimisha Nambiar and Deepak Prabhakaran also feature. At its center is a father-daughter story shaped by displacement and the attempt to begin again in Rameswaram, giving the film a human-scale entry point into a larger historical wound.

Nova

Release date: October 9, 2026

A mysterious abandoned house. A group of strangers. A secret stretching back to 1969. Milo’s "Nova" brings Raiza Wilson, Dhurva Neni, Adhvithi Shetty, Hridika Biswas and Sendrayan together for a fantasy horror thriller built around a time-spanning mystery. For viewers who like their horror with science-fiction and supernatural elements rather than straightforward scares, this could be the wildcard.

TELUGU

Mayookha

Release date: October 9, 2026

Payal Chengappa takes center stage in "Mayookha," a female-led crime thriller from debutant director Shree Tej S.K. Muralidhar Goud. Aman Masud, Dev D, Lavanya Rani and Charishma Dabbara star in the film. A string of murders targeting single women pushes Mayookha into an increasingly dangerous investigation. Its woman-at-the-center mystery gives the Telugu release a clear theatrical identity.

Aadarsha Kutumbam House No: 47

Release date: October 9, 2026

On the surface, Chittibabu’s family appears to have the makings of an ideal household. Then House No. 47 enters the picture. Trivikram Srinivas directs Venkatesh Daggubati, Srinidhi Shetty, Nara Rohith, Nivetha Pethuraj, Rao Ramesh and Vennela Kishore in a family entertainer that gradually reveals a darker secret. That tonal shift is the reason to watch.

Good Time

Release date: October 9, 2026

Jaani is a young cab driver convinced that one lucky break will finally turn his life around. Chanakya Jilla’s "Good Time" follows him through two chaotic days of love, gambling, bad decisions and increasingly complicated circumstances. Nikhil Gajula, Anyuktha Nallani and Soundharya Lahari lead the cast. Its Gen-Z slice-of-life energy makes it the lighter option in this Telugu lineup.

Baa Baa Black Sheep

Release date: October 9, 2026

"Guns, gold and a high-stakes hunt over a single day" is the setup for Guni Manchikanti’s "Baa Baa Black Sheep." Akshay Lagusani, Tinnu Anand, Upendra Limaye, Vishnu Oi and George Maryan lead the Telugu crime caper, where three lives collide amid secrets and greed. Its compact, pressure-cooker premise makes this one worth considering for audiences after a fast-moving genre ride.

Comrade Kalyan

Release date: October 9, 2026

Set in the early 1990s on the Andhra Pradesh-Odisha border, "Comrade Kalyan" has Sree Vishnu in the role of a theatre owner who becomes drawn into Naxalism. Janakiram Marella directs Mahima Nambiar, Radhika Sarathkumar, Shine Tom Chacko and Upendra Limaye alongside him. Its unusual blend of cinema, ideology and political conflict makes this one of the more distinctive Telugu releases.

MALAYALAM

Chiram

Release date: October 9, 2026

A romance steeped in nostalgia, "Chiram" follows Seetha, a Malayali researcher who travels to Kolkata to study Baul music and falls for Sam, a freelance photographer. Anoop Menon and Aiswarya Midhun Koroth lead the film directed by Sindhu Paradayil and N Sudheer. Its 1990s setting, love story and Baul backdrop offer an evocative draw.

PUNJABI

Eh Din Roz Ni Aune

Release date: October 9, 2026

Harbhajan Mann and his son Avkash Mann headline Aneet Sekhon’s "Eh Din Roz Ni Aune," which pairs a carefree 25-year-old with a pragmatic 55-year-old businessman. What begins as an unlikely clash of personalities evolves into an office-and-family drama about mentorship, reconciliation and second chances. Heer Achhra, Nirmal Rishi and Sarabjit Cheema also star.
