Will Gluck’s “One Night Only” presents a unique setting. The dystopian comedy is set in a time when premarital sex is illegal in the U.S. for 364 days a year, except for a single designated “One Night.” Starring Callum Turner as Owen, who plays a pizza shop owner, in a committed relationship with his girlfriend, Malika (Maya Hawke). His chance encounter with Monica Barbaro’s Allie sets the story in motion as the two decide to help each other find their ideal sexual partners.
Sharing what drew him to the story, Turner tells Variety India exclusively, “I love this script because by the third time Owen runs into Allie, I thought, ‘This has got to be some sort of cosmic joke.’ Allie does not realize that Owen is her soulmate, and Owen does not realize that Allie is his. That is what this story is about: two soulmates finding each other on the craziest night of the year in New York City.”

For Turner, it was the film’s rom-com nature that appealed to him. “This film is about true love and who you are destined to be with. I loved the time pressure of it, this idea that everyone has been building up energy all year and then, in one night, all that energy is unleashed. It felt like a safari, with everyone turning into wild animals. It is a brilliant concept,” he shares.
“One Night Only” releases in theaters in India on August 21.
