The ‘Bring Matt Home’ Cinematic Universe Gets Bigger With Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’
Matt Damon is the lead star of the upcoming Christopher Nolan-directed film “The Odyssey.” Based on Homer’s epic, the film features one of the most goated ensembles in recent times. At the forefront of it, playing Odysseus, the 55-year-old star is once again charting his journey home, a theme that has found a place in some of his other films as well.

Now a running joke in the Hollywood film space, it’s noted that the actor, who has already been part of three such projects, is now on to his fourth. Moreover, these films have been made with massive budgets, yielding $1.8 billion at the worldwide box office over a $343 million budget across three films - “Interstellar” ($165 million), “The Martian” ($108 million) and “Saving Private Ryan” ($70 million). Add to it the massive $250 million budget of “The Odyssey”; the total money that the West has spent to get this man to his humble abode is almost $600 million.
Called the ‘Bring Matt Home Multiverse,’ it has enlisted fans to monitor and map the actor’s journey back to his beloved, making it everyone’s mission to ensure he returns safely. Almost becoming a sub-genre of its own, many have proposed getting a private flight to him at this point. After all, the man has been trying to do so for almost three decades now, from “Saving Private Ryan” (1998) and “Interstellar” (2014) to “The Martian” (2015) and “The Odyssey” (2026).

In “Saving Private Ryan,” U.S. Army Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) and his squad are sent behind enemy lines to locate and rescue Paratrooper James Ryan (Matt Damon). In “Interstellar,” he betrays fellow space voyagers in order to return to Earth, but fails to do so. As Dr. Mark Watney in “Interstellar,” he finds a whole new way to cultivate potatoes just to survive and fly back home. Finally, he will be seen fighting monsters and other mythical beings while returning to Ithaca after winning the Trojan War in “The Odyssey.”
The Chirtopher Nolan film, starring Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron, releases on July 17, 2026.
