Andrew Garfield Reaffirms Support for Gay Spider Man: ‘Anyone Can Be in That Suit’
Andrew Garfield is once again making the case for a more inclusive Spider Man. The actor, who played Peter Parker in “The Amazing Spider Man” and “The Amazing Spider Man 2,” has revisited comments he made more than a decade ago about the possibility of the web slinger being gay. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly ahead of “The Uprising,” Garfield said his position has not changed.
“It was an exercise in rebellion that I felt passionate about,” Garfield said, reflecting on his earlier comments. “I just still believe that anyone can be in that suit.” Garfield first raised the possibility during the promotional campaign for “The Amazing Spider Man 2” in 2013. While discussing Peter Parker’s relationship with Mary Jane Watson, he floated the idea of changing the character’s romantic dynamic altogether.
“I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ,” Andrew Garfield had said at the time. “What if MJ is a dude? Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality?”

He then asked the question that would continue to follow him for years: “Why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?” Garfield later clarified that he was not suggesting his version of Peter Parker should suddenly come out in a future sequel. Instead, he described the idea as a broader philosophical question about what Spider Man represents.
For Andrew Garfield, the character’s appeal has always been rooted in his ability to represent people who feel like outsiders. In a subsequent discussion about the idea, he argued that Spider Man could stand for people across race and sexuality and that the hero’s willingness to put himself in harm’s way should not be restricted by identity.
The actor even floated Michael B. Jordan as a possible male version of Peter’s love interest at the time, though he later stressed that the suggestion was tongue in cheek rather than a serious casting proposal.
More than a decade later, Garfield’s latest comments come at a time when the Spider Man mythology has continued to expand across live action and animation. “Spider Man: Into the Spider Verse” and “Spider Man: Across the Spider Verse” have demonstrated how broadly the character can be interpreted, with Miles Morales becoming the most prominent alternate Spider Man on screen.
Yet the live action films have continued to centre heterosexual versions of Peter Parker, with Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland each playing the character through different iterations of his relationships and identity.
Garfield himself has also spoken recently about what would make him interested in returning to the role. In August, he said he would want any potential Spider Man comeback to be “very strange” and “completely unconventional,” rather than simply repeating the formula of previous films.
For now, there is no indication that Andrew Garfield’s comments point to an actual gay Spider Man project. His latest remarks are instead a reaffirmation of an idea he has consistently connected to the character’s larger meaning. For Garfield, the mask has always mattered more than the person underneath it.“Anyone can be in that suit.”
