Ranbir Kapoor Says Playing Lord Rama in ‘Ramayana’ Is a ‘Responsibility’: ‘My Job Was to Be Worthy of the Faith’
Ranbir Kapoor celebrated his 44th birthday on September 28. To celebrate the occasion, the makers of “Ramayana” shared behind-the-scenes glimpses of the star transforming into Lord Rama for the movies. Titled “This Is Our Rama: BTS,” the video features Kapoor alongside director Nitesh Tiwari and Arun Govil, who discuss the qualities that make the actor suited to portray the revered character.
When asked about his transformation for the role, Ranbir explains, “Lord Rama's biggest strength is not his bow, it is his Kshama (forgiving nature) - his ability to forgive. Ye role nahi hai. It's not ki mujhe ek film offer hui hai aur role exciting hai. Ye ek zimmedaari hai (This is not a role. It's not as if I was offered a film and the role is exciting. It's a responsibility)."

He shares how he approaches the character on a daily basis. Kapoor quips, “Everything comes down to the belief and simplicity of the individual playing Lord Rama. Every day I reminded myself that my job was not to be worthy of this role. My job was to be worthy of the faith that people place in this story.”
The two-part film stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Hanuman and Ravie Dubey as Lakshman. In the video, Arun Govil, who portrays King Dasharath, joins Sai Pallavi and Ravie Dubey to discuss the qualities they believe make Ranbir a fitting choice to portray Lord Rama.
Arun Govil, who played Rama in Ramanand Sagar's iconic 1987 television show is playing the role of Dasharath in the movies. Opening up about Ranbir as Rama, he says, “Jo main sochta tha ki Ram aise chalte honge, aise bethte honge, aise dekhte honge, baat karte honge, toh yeh cheezen hain unmein (What I had imagined that Ram would walk like this, sit like this, look like this and speak like this, I can see all those qualities in him). Normally you don't expect that a star would come and touch your feet, but he always does that. Among all the young stars who are available at the moment, Ranbir Kapoor is the closest to play Lord Rama."
Director Nitesh Tiwari emphasizes, “Namit discussed Ranbir with me. Suddenly, I felt like it was all possible with Ranbir. He ticked all the boxes.”
“Ramayana: Part 1” is scheduled to release on November 8 in India, while it is releasing two days early, on November 6, worldwide.
