‘Khalifa,’ ‘I’m Game,’ ‘Bethlehem Kudumba Unit’: Can Onam Turn August Into Malayalam Cinema’s Biggest Box-Office Month? (EXCLUSIVE)
With “Thudakkam” having released on August 7 and three major star-led films following on August 20 and 21, August could prove to be a crucial month for Malayalam cinema. The crowded Onam window brings together star power, festival advantage and films targeting distinctly different sections of the audience. The question is whether the lineup can deliver the industry’s biggest monthly box-office haul.
While the much-awaited Onam releases “Khalifa” and “I’m Game” hit the screens on August 20, Nivin Pauly’s “Bethlehem Kudumba Unit” releases on August 21.
A Star-Studded Onam Lineup
“Khalifa,” starring Prithviraj Sukumaran and directed by Vysakh, is positioned as a large-scale action entertainer. The film has generated additional buzz with Mohanlal’s special appearance. At the same time, the combination of Prithviraj, Vysakh and writer Jinu V. Abraham has made it one of the most anticipated Malayalam releases of the year.
Also releasing on the same day is Dulquer Salmaan’s action thriller “I’m Game,” directed by Nahas Hidhayath, which is set against the world of sports betting. The romantic comedy “Bethlehem Kudumba Unit,” directed by Girish AD, follows on August 21. Unlike the two action-oriented releases, it is expected to appeal to audiences looking for romance, comedy and family entertainment.
Trade Predicts a Close Contest
Reflecting on the box office prospects of the three films, Suresh Shenoy, trade expert and managing partner of Shenoys Cinemas, Kochi, says, “All three films have generated huge expectations, primarily because they feature some of the biggest stars in Malayalam cinema. ‘Khalifa’ and ‘I’m Game’ are action entertainers, so the major competition is likely to be between these two films.”
He adds, “At the same time, ‘Bethlehem Kudumba Unit’ has an advantage in the form of its director, Girish AD, who has already delivered successful films. I believe the family audience will definitely be drawn towards this movie.”
A reasonable pre-release trade estimate could put the worldwide opening potential of “Khalifa” and “I’m Game” at around ₹10-15 crore each, depending on screen allocation, advance bookings and overseas performance. A strong audience response could push either film considerably higher in the days that follow. The crucial factor, however, will be their second weekends.
The film that could potentially upset the calculations is “Bethlehem Kudumba Unit.” Its success, however, will ultimately depend on whether the content connects strongly enough to drive family and repeat viewership.
Screen Sharing Remains A Concern For Exhibitors
With three major films arriving within two days, exhibitors will have to make difficult decisions over show allocations. The opening weekend could become a battle for premium screens, particularly in Kerala’s major centers.
Prithviraj has addressed the simultaneous release of “Khalifa,” “I’m Game” and “Bethlehem Kudumba Unit,” noting that “Khalifa” was announced for the Onam window before the other films joined the race and expressing hope that all three perform well.
For exhibitors, the crowded slate could also have an upside. If all three films work, the holiday season could remain strong for several weeks rather than depending on a single blockbuster.
Anoop Naroor, a Kerala-based exhibitor, is optimistic about the three major Onam releases. “I have good expectations from all three Onam films, especially because they belong to different genres. ‘I’m Game’ and ‘Khalifa’ have the potential to attract the youth. ‘Bethlehem Kudumba Unit’ is a family-oriented film that is likely to appeal to family audiences. Most importantly, if these films, including ‘Thudakkam,’ have good content, August could turn out to be a superb month for the Malayalam film industry.”
