Jason Momoa on Landing Role As Lobo in ‘Supergirl’: ‘I Welcomed Anyone to Try to Challenge Me to Play Him!’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Anyone who has watched the trailer for “Supergirl,” the second entrant in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DCU (DC Universe), will agree that Jason Momoa is the perfect Lobo. For one, the former “Aquaman” actor’s physicality fits the comic book character’s look perfectly. Furthermore, he sells the mannerisms and swagger of the alien mercenary who traverses the universe on his punk-rock motorcycle, hunting his bounty and leaving chaos in his wake.

Speaking of landing the role of Lobo, Momoa revealed his pitch to Gunn and Safran, who were in the midst of the great DCU shuffle that led to Henry Cavill’s exit as Superman, amongst others.

“I’ve been with Peter for such a long time, and I've known Gunn for quite a long time, too, and this has just been my dream role. I always thought I would play him—I welcomed anyone that wanted to, to try to challenge me to play him! So, right when they got the news about DC Studios, I reached out. I was actually hoping there was gonna be an audition for it, 'cause I really wanted this role more than anything. So, I guess I was texting them out of excitement for their next chapter, you know, I don’t know what your plans are, but this is one of them."

Long before he was announced as Lobo, Momoa had been vocal about how much he wanted to play the DCU character. Back in December 2024, when he confirmed the news of his “Supergirl” casting, he shared a screen-grab of an old interview where he had talked about collecting the comics and being ready to accept the role if he ever got the call. He captioned it, “They called.”

Lobo was created in 1983 by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen for DC Comics’ “Omega Men #3”. After his initial appearance, the character didn’t have much happening for him. However, post a reinvention, Lobo became an absolute hit with readers and was even one of Stan Lee’s favourite DC characters because of his “chaotic evil” energy.

Considering Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl, is a chaos machine, too (compared to her cousin, Superman), it will be interesting to see this team-up. The world of “Supergirl” teased in the trailers and promos confirms that it’s going to be a whole different look and feel.

Elaborating further on this, Momoa talks about the world that director Craig Gillespie has created and their collaboration.

"Craig's built a phenomenal world. We first met actually at Legacy Effects, where you get to see all the animatronics, stuff that you just don't normally see in movies anymore. And it was really cool to feel like this almost had a ‘Star Wars’-esque kind of vibe, where everything's in front of you, everything is on the camera. Everything we're shooting is right there; there's not a lot of visual effects. So, you get to feast on it as an actor,” Momoa concludes.

“Supergirl” releases in theaters on June 26, 2026.
