From Page To Stage: ‘The Housemaid’ Movie Starring Sydney Sweeney And Amanda Seyfried To Be Adapted For A Play
The hit movie “The Housemaid” is being turned into a live stage play by Lionsgate. The studio is working with a British production company called Melting Pot, run by Simon Friend and Hanna Osmolska, who previously worked on “Life of Pi” and “Paranormal Activity”. They have hired Bekah Brunstetter, the playwright behind Broadway's “The Notebook”, to write the script. There is no official start date for the show just yet.
This news comes right after the movie version became a massive hit. Lionsgate only spent $35 million to make the film, but it made a huge $400 million at the box office worldwide. Because it did so well, the studio is also making a movie sequel called “The Housemaid’s Secret” that will start filming later this year and is set to hit theaters on December 17, 2027.

The story follows a young woman named Millie who is broke and has a secret past. She takes a job as a live-in maid for the wealthy Winchester family. However, she quickly finds out that the couple's perfect life is a lie. The stage play will combine ideas from both the book and the movie, which are mostly the same except for slightly different endings.
“‘The Housemaid’ has all the elements for a successful stage adaptation – a blockbuster title, compelling characters, and a story full of twists and turns that builds tension and momentum in a way that naturally lends itself to the stage,” said Lionsgate’s president of global products and experiences Jenefer Brown. “This project reflects how our hit films and IP can be transformed into novel experiences.”
Lionsgate has been turning many of its big movies into live shows lately. They are currently working on stage versions of “Dirty Dancing”, “La La Land” and Wonder. They also have a live play based on The Hunger Games running in London right now.
“When I first read ‘The Housemaid,’ it was exhilarating,” Friend said. “What occurred to me is how truly theatrical the story is, not only happening largely in a single, claustrophobic location, but the twisty elements which contemporize what has long worked in potboiler stage thrillers.”
The original book came out in 2022 and became a massive bestseller through word-of-mouth. The author, Freida McFadden, turned it into a hit trilogy, writing ‘The Housemaid's Secret’ in 2023 and ‘The Housemaid Is Watching’ in 2024.
Brunstetter added: “I’m so thrilled to be bringing this gripping, emotional, strange, and even funny story to the stage. Not only have I fallen in love with the adaptation process and bringing books to life on both stage and screen, I’m extremely excited to dig into ‘The Housemaid’s’ incredibly universal themes of jealousy, the pain of desire, and the traumas that connect us.”
