‘DeSu7,’ ‘Emperor Vs Sarat Chandra,’ ‘Bohurupi: The Golden Daku’: The Biggest Bengali Films Releasing During Durga Puja

Durga Puja is the time when marquee Bengali films hit the theaters. The festival begins from Oct.10 with Mahalaya while the five-day celebration begins from Oct.16 (Maha Shashti). From Shiboprosad Mukherjee’s “Bohurupi: The Golden Daku,” to “DeSu7,” here is a look at the line up. 

‘Bohurupi: The Golden Daku’  
Cast: Jisshu Sengupta, Shiboprosad Mukherjee, Koushani Mukherjee, Sohini Sarkar, Prodeep Bhattacharya  
Directors: Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee 
Release Date: Oct. 15 

This is the sequel of the 2024 blockbuster, “Bohurupi” with Shiboprosad Mukherjee returning in the titular role. This time, audiences will see Jisshu Sengupta as the cop who tries to track down Bikram Pramanik/Bohurupi. Koushani Mukherjee is back as Jhimli, his wife who is a pickpocket. The first film was based on a series of real-life bank heists that happened in 24 Paraganas in West Bengal between 1998 to 2005. The lead character of Bikram is someone who loses faith in the law after being badly beaten up on a false charge.

‘Emperor Vs Sarat Chandra’

Srijit Mukherji’s second release of the year after “Winkle Twinkle” is a fictionalized account of Bengali novelist Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s fight against the ban imposed on his novel “Pather Dabi” in 1927. Tota Roy Chowdhury whom pan-India audiences have seen lately in “The Revolutionaries” is playing the lead role of novelist Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. Abir Chatterjee plays Sabyasachi Mallick, the fictional revolutionary character of the novel who takes on the British Empire. 

‘The Eken: Kerala - e - Kurukshetra’

The franchise around the quirky bumbling detective, Eken Babu (Anirban Chakrabarti) is one of the biggest theatrical properties of the West Bengal film industry. This time, the mystery is centered around the disappearance of a high-profile person, Mihir Sen (Kamaleswar Mukherjee), which leads Eken Babu to Kerala. The detective initially struggles to understand if he has been kidnapped or is it an invitation.

The most hyped film of 2026, “DeSu7,” is the directorial debut of Dev Adhikari. It is about two lovers who reunite after years of separation. It is an action-packed film with a political backdrop. The two leads take on the baddies in a script loaded with drama, romance and emotions. Adhikari’s team has released a song, which is filmed in Ladakh.
