The month of September delivered a bunch of surprises and shocks across entertainment industries. While some of the films featuring A-listers failed to draw audiences to theaters, some small-budget movies clicked among the audiences and ticket windows.

Among the Hollywood movies, “Avengers Endgame: Encore” (re-release), “Resident Evil” and “Heart of the Beast” did moderate numbers. On the other hand, some regional films proved profitable in the domestic market.

Hindi Cinema

Hindi cinema had an interesting month as prominent movies like “Haiwaan,” “Daayra” and “Vibe,” featuring known and big names, underperformed. Meanwhile, the low-budget “Hanuman Ansh,” made at around ₹2 crore, crossed the ₹300 crore mark, collecting the maximum return on investment in September. Pankaj Tripathi’s “Mirzapur: The Movie” also emerged as a box office hit, raking in ₹229 crore. The film is still running in cinemas. Sidharth Malhotra’s “The Vvaan,” which is set to surpass the ₹50 crore mark, also turned out to be a success.

Telugu Cinema

Only Nani’s big-budget “The Paradise” attracted audiences to theaters, earning over ₹100 crore in six days. Apart from the action thriller, prominent releases like “Epic” and “Romanchakam” underperformed in the domestic market.

Tamil Cinema

Tamil industry had a better month at the box office compared to Telugu cinema, with Soori’s “Mandaadi” and Hiphop Tamizha Adhi’s “Meesaya Murukku 2” hitting the bullseye. Big films like “Sardar 2” and “Dorothy” failed to connect with audiences.

Malayalam Cinema

After delivering the biggest Malayalam grosser of all time in the month of August with "Bethlehem Kudumba Unit," the regional industry struggled in September. While a mid-budget film like “Pradhama Drishtiya Kuttakkar” performed moderately in Kerala, Dulquer Salmaan’s highly anticipated “I’m Game” proved to be a forgettable affair.

Kannada Cinema

Among the clutter of releases, “Citylights” managed to post decent numbers due to its modest budget and positive word of mouth.
