Ahead of the December release of “Avengers: Doomsday,” the MCU has given fans an opportunity to assemble again with the re-release of “Avengers: Endgame: Encore.”

The re-release will feature three new additions: a newly created introduction, additional footage and a special end tag connected to “Avengers: Doomsday.” Joe Russo has described the re-release as a “critical companion story” to “Avengers: Endgame.” Beyond setting the stage for the next chapter of the MCU, the theatrical return could also help the superhero epic achieve a major box-office milestone.

“Avengers: Endgame,” with $2,799,439,100, is currently the second-highest worldwide grosser of all time after “Avatar,” at $2,923,710,708, and is $124,271,608 (₹1,179.88 crore) behind the James Cameron directorial. With the excitement and nostalgia surrounding “Endgame,” the re-release gives it a chance to surpass “Avatar” and become the biggest global grosser.

The Box Office Timeline

The box office battle between “Avengers: Endgame” and “Avatar” has been very interesting. During its original theatrical release, the MCU film failed to surpass the record of the Sam Worthington-starrer by a small margin. So, to push past “Avatar,” the last part of Marvel’s Infinity Saga was re-released in July 2019 with an extended cut including an unfinished deleted scene, a tribute to Stan Lee, and a sneak peek at “Spider-Man: Far From Home.” This move helped it hit the jackpot as the film marched ahead of “Avatar” and topped the list.

Marvel re-released “Avengers: Endgame” in July 2019 with an extended cut that included an unfinished deleted scene, a tribute to Stan Lee and a sneak peek at “Spider-Man: Far From Home.” The move paid off, with the film overtaking “Avatar” and topping the worldwide box-office grossers’ list.

However, in March 2021, “Avatar” returned to theaters in China and earned enough to reclaim the top position. Now, with the second re-release of “Avengers: Endgame,” the movie will once again target the numero uno spot on the highest-grossers’ list.
