Emily Hampshire, last seen in 2019's "Spider-Man: Far From Home" as an AI called E.D.I.T.H., returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in “VisionQuest.” She joins fellow AI characters in Mindspace, a digital environment within Vision’s quantum processors for the eight-episode season. In an exclusive conversation with Variety India, she talks about the recent uproar surrounding AI companies’ plans for rigorous development even in the face of widespread backlash.

In an interview with Politico, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman tried to find a silver lining amid discussions of the technology’s detrimental effects. Listing differences between his company and others, the OpenAI CEO expressed his plan for AI regularization while accepting certain trade-offs that come with it. “We believe that the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology and people having the agency [to use AI widely].”

This sparked an online discussion about the need for better regulation of AI safety, even as many high-profile resignations shake the industry. Sharing her take on the ongoing debate surrounding the impact of the evolution of AI, especially as someone portraying E.D.I.T.H., Hampshire says, “This show is so in the zeitgeist and to actually portray an AI is great, because in doing so, it did really change my perspective on everything. I have never felt more in love with being human than I did playing E.D.I.T.H., which is seemingly strange. I've never played a character who so desperately wanted to be in on being alive.”

Hampshire further details the little quirks of her character in the Paul Bettany-led production. “She’s someone who so desperately wants to experience things. As an AI, you have all the knowledge; you know all the ingredients to the greatest meal, but you don't get to taste it. E.D.I.T.H. is so curious and interested in why humans do the things they do that don't make any sense. It's interesting and fascinating. And it really just made me really like that I'm human.”

"VisionQuest" had a two-episode season premiere and will continue streaming the rest of its eight-episode run on JioHotstar.
