Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan’ Nears Censor Clearance, Release Announcement Expected Soon

The long-delayed release of Tamil star and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joselph Vijay's highly anticipated Tamil film “Jana Nayagan" appears to be back on track, with the film's censor proceedings now in their final stages. The latest development paves the way for an official announcement of the theatrical release after months of uncertainty.

The film's certification process with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had been delayed following objections that eventually led to legal proceedings between the makers and the certification body. According to industry sources, the remaining formalities are expected to be completed within the coming week.

"We have got an update that the censor proceedings of “Jana Nayagan” will be complete by next week, and the release would probably happen this month or at the beginning of August," said Lal, a Kerala-based trade expert.

With the censor process nearing completion, attention has now shifted to the producers, who are expected to announce the film's long-awaited release date shortly.

Directed by H. Vinoth, “Jana Nayagan" is one of the biggest Tamil releases in the pipeline. The film has drawn extraordinary attention not only because of Vijay's star power and its commercial scale but also because it is widely expected to be his final film. The film also features Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju and Bobby Deol.

Trade circles believe the completion of the censor process removes the final major regulatory hurdle ahead of the film's theatrical rollout. An official release date is expected to trigger promotional campaigns and distribution activities across domestic and overseas markets.

Censor delay and legal battle

“Jana Nayagan” was originally submitted to the CBFC in December 2025 and was scheduled for a theatrical release on January 9, 2026, ahead of the Pongal festival. However, instead of receiving certification, the film was referred to a Revising Committee following complaints alleging that certain scenes hurt religious sentiments and portrayed the armed forces in an objectionable manner.

The unexpected referral stalled the certification process just days before the planned release, forcing the makers to explore additional legal and procedural options. The prolonged delay eventually resulted in a legal battle with the CBFC over the certification process. The movie was also leaked online.

Despite the setback, the film has continued to generate strong interest among exhibitors, distributors and overseas buyers. Industry observers expect "Jana Nayagan" to emerge as one of the biggest Tamil theatrical releases of the year, with significant demand anticipated in key international markets.
