Trade Talk: ‘I Seriously Believe Yash starrer ‘Toxic’ Will Not Give Competition To Ranveer Singh’s ‘Dhurandhar 2’ In North India’
Ranveer Singh-starrer “Dhurandhar,” which released last year, emerged as the biggest Bollywood grosser of all time at the box office. While the buzz generated by its sequel has been unprecedented, Yash-starrer “Toxic,” which is arriving on the same day (March 19), has also garnered immense curiosity among fans and audience.
While Yash’s last two films, “KGF” and “KGF 2,” turned out to be massive blockbusters in the Hindi market, will “Toxic” make a dent in the business of “Dhurandhar 2” in the northern part of India?
Variety India speaks to prominent trade experts about how the intense battle between "Dhurandhar 2" and "Toxic" will impact the trade of both biggies.
‘Dhurandhar 2’: One of the Most-Anticipated Hindi Films In The History of Indian Cinema
Vishek Chauhan, Chief Executive Officer at Roopbani Cinema in Bihar, hints that the Ranveer Singh-starrer will have an upper hand in North India. “I seriously believe ‘Toxic’ will not be able to give much competition to ‘Dhurandhar 2’ in the northern parts because it is sitting on a base of ₹800 to ₹900 crore. This is one of the biggest bases ever for a Hindi film and the audience spectrum of ‘Dhurandhar 2’ is as wide as possible. So, thinking on those lines, ‘Dhurandhar 2’ is probably one of the most-anticipated Hindi films in the history of Indian cinema right now. So, what you have to understand is that yes, Yash is a very big brand. Yash is a big star. But Yash is only two films old. One is ‘KGF’ and the other is ‘KGF 2.’ So, and this is not ‘KGF.’ This is a separate film. Yes, the youth will be very excited about ‘Toxic’ and they might give it a shot. But there is a lot of anticipation about how the story of ‘Dhurandhar’ concludes.”

An Unnecessary Box-Office Battle
Explaining how this battle will affect the trade, especially in the mass centers, Vishek adds, “I think this clash is probably one of the most unnecessary clashes in the history of Indian cinema. Normally, when you have a clash of films, the clashing films differ in terms of genre. But this type of clash should be avoided. Because the biggest audience of both these films is the single-screen audience. And what will happen in such a big clash is that the single-screen audience will be the ones to bear the brunt. The single-screen owners will have to choose one picture over the other. Either they will put ‘Dhurandhar 2’ or they will put ‘Toxic.’ And in our North belt, there are many such places where only one cinema hall is left in big areas. That too is surviving with great difficulty. So, they will not be able to put these films. So, it is a loss for them. And if these pictures come on different dates, then it is very beneficial for the trade. In the larger interest of the trade, films like this should come at least in a different space like after two weeks. Nobody is going to gain from this, except the egos of a few people. I think trade is going to lose immensely.”
Bet on 'Dhurandhar 2'!
Raj Bansal, a multiplex owner and film distributor from Jaipur, also placed his bets on “Dhurandhar 2” and shares, “I doubt ‘Toxic’ impacting ‘Dhurandhar 2’ in North India, it could do very well in the southern part, but ‘Dhurandhar 2’ will be the best bet in North India.”
