‘The Batman II’ Finally Moves Ahead: Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan and Andy Serkis Join Robert Pattinson’s Gotham
After what has felt like an endless wait, “The Batman II” is finally beginning to look like a film that is actually happening. Matt Reeves’ sequel to “The Batman” has reportedly locked a production start window, and with that update has come a fresh round of casting buzz. Joining Robert Pattinson in the next chapter of Gotham are Andy Serkis, Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan.
The sequel takes the story forward from Reeves’ 2022 reboot, which introduced Pattinson as a brooding, emotionally fractured Bruce Wayne still early in his journey as Batman. The first film leaned more into noir and detective drama than superhero spectacle, and if the new casting, as per Deadline, is anything to go by, the second one may be widening that world in a big way.

What is now drawing the most attention, though, is not just who has joined the cast, but who they are expected to play.
Andy Serkis is set to return as Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne’s trusted butler and the one figure in his life who still carries some emotional weight. Alfred did not have a massive presence in the first film, but he remained central to Bruce’s personal arc. His return suggests the sequel will continue to explore the man behind the mask and not just the city around him.
Sebastian Stan, meanwhile, is stepping in as Harvey Dent, the Gotham district attorney who eventually becomes Two-Face in Batman lore. If that casting turns out to be accurate, it is a very strong fit for Reeves’ version of Gotham, which is already deeply obsessed with corruption, moral collapse and systems rotting from within. Dent entering the picture would feel less like fan service and more like a natural progression.
Then there is Scarlett Johansson, whose role is still being kept completely secret for now. And naturally, that has made her the most intriguing addition of the lot. There is no confirmation yet on whether she is playing a major Gotham name or an original player built for Reeves’ universe, but the mystery around her character has already done its job.
With Pattinson back, Reeves returning and Gotham seemingly expanding beyond the corners we saw in the first film, “The Batman II” is finally getting closer. For a sequel that has spent so long in the waiting zone, that alone is enough to get the excitement going.
