Soori’s ‘Mandaadi’ To Return to IMAX On October 9
By Sreedhar Pillai,
Actor Soori has tweeted on X that his blockbuster release “Mandaadi” is returning to IMAX, October 9 onwards. This is reportedly the first time in Tamil cinema that a film is returning to IMAX after its initial theatrical run. The sports action drama, directed by Mathimaran Pugazhendhi, has grossed over ₹150 crore worldwide and premiered on Netflix today (October 8). Normally, only big-ticket Tamil pan-India films led by top heroes get an IMAX release for an enhanced widescreen and audio experience. But producer Elred Kumar felt his sailing sports film deserved a premium large format (PLF) release, alongside standard, EPIQ, PVR’s PXL and Dolby Cinema. Mandaadi did fantastic business across the three IMAX screens in Tamil Nadu, with audiences lapping up its grand scale and intense boat-race sequences.

The trade buzz is that “Mandaadi”’s strong IMAX performance has opened the floodgates for other Tamil producers, who are now making films with Tier-2 heroes, are now exploring PLF releases for their projects too. As planned earlier, Rajinikanth’s “Jailer 2” will be the next Tamil film to hit IMAX, while Suriya’s “Scene,” due for Diwali, may struggle to get PLF shows as screens are likely to be shared between “Ramayana” and “Godzilla Minus Zero.”
Anyway, Soori’s “Mandaadi” continues to be on a roll! Despite its OTT release, the film will continue playing at the Chennai IMAX screen and share shows with Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” which is also returning.
